Having fear of fear itself is the worst.
>>341551469
I'm not scared of horror movies because I can pull out too easily.
I'm not scared of real life horror like haunted houses because of how much control I have of the situation.
I can't play horror games because they give me just the right amount of control.

lol
They stop being scary when some bullshit monster keeps killing you in the same room so many times in a row.
when i try to play a horror and i encounter the creature i immediately pause then exit.
>>341551469
I'd say I'm 2.5ish, I love games that have unsettling stuff in them, but the problem doesn't come until after I'm done playing and start thinking about the game, that's when I actually become paranoid and get sort of jumpy.

Spooky games thread?
I had a really good time with Outlast and its DLC, as well as Until Dawn. Looking forward to Outlast 2.

Until Dawn was cool

I cant enjoy horror films or vidya because its fiction and "immersion" is for retards. I probably have some degree of autism.
>>341553029
Depends on what you find some
Some people are terrified of Corpse Party just because how verbose and descriptive it is with it's horror despite nothing on screen being particularly scary.
Anyone know of any 'must play' horror games? I'll take anything as long as it's not some obscure spoopy Asian gore-fest.
I'm a 0 in most things horror, but when it comes to horror games I go 5 real fuckin' quick and hide behind the pause screen like a child.
I'm not actually scared by the monsters chasing me, like, at all, but a good horror atmosphere scares the shit out of me because even later in the day I'll start getting paranoid as fuck.
I think it'd probably make for an interesting experience if my 5 self were to force myself to marathon a bunch of horror shit at night.
Anyone got any recommendations? I'm thinking along the lines of Silent Hill 2 or similar.
I just picked up REmake HD on Steam
Only horror games I've ever beaten were RE4 and Dead Space 1/2 (if you can even call 2 horror)
Tried Silent Hill 2 but I'm too retarded for the puzzles
All the other ones I've ever played were when I was 12 and I couldn't handle it
What am I in for boys?

>I probably have some degree of autism.
At least you know you are the problem
Only time this game truly made me jump
>>341551469
0-1 with an occasional 2 if I am lucky. Most horror games are shit with the exception of the silent hill series and fatal frame. I blame the current trend of removing players of engagement options which limits the gameplay to that of a mediocre stealth game. Removing combat doesnt make the game scarier but it sure makes it fucking boring

Im pretty sure it was that way for RE:Zero at least

This, I loathe jumpscares and very rarely see anything scary for other reasons.
>>341554472
Just off the top of my head, Silent Hill 1-4, Dead Space 1 and 2 not so much for the monsters but they have fantastic atmosphere, Fatal Frame if you can get pass the silly combat system, Yume Nikki is one of my all time favorite games for atmosphere, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has great atmosphere as well
>>341554472
Dead Space 1-3
1 is great because enemies are spoopy and they come too often so you don't get used to them
2 is fantastic because the amount of spoopy to enemy ratio is just right
3 is space alien cod which is why horror levels drops drastically in 3
>>341556781

Heard of it before in passing, but I know virtually nothing about it. I'll check it out!
>>341554873
A friend of mine's a big frictional fanboy so I've heard good things.
I was too much of a pussy to play through even the first 30 minutes of Amnesia but Soma seems doable! Ty!
>>341555701
I was planning on doing SH3 eventually, if I could get a copy. Is 4 worth it? I've been told it's not a good entry to the series, but fuck me if https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xo65v1kTRZA doesn't scare the fuck out of me.
There are major acceleration problems and a literal game-breaking bug on PC that stopped me from ever playing DS1, but I should check out 2.
Fatal Frame looks really intimidating, something about that sort of foreign psychological horror that FF goes for is way scarier than the type of horror that already freaks me out. I'll check it out, but like, after I conquer the easy stuff.
Yume Nikki seems interesting, if anything for the surrealist tone. I'll check it out.
Oi, you're already talking to a big S.T.A.L.K.E.R. fanboy! Idk why but for some reason most of the mutants never freaked me out, the closest I got to 'scared' in SoC was running into those freaky-ass Snorks.
>>341556781
Already mentioned DS1,2 - but is 3 really worth playing? I played it a bit in co-op and found it to be a standard sci-fi TPS with an absurd amount of microtransactions
>>341557404
I know you said
>not some obscure spoopy Asian gore-fest.
But you should check out Corpse Party
>>341557404
>Is 4 worth it?
imo yes, the 2nd half is notorious for being pretty much a giant escort quest, but there is some really freaky shit in the game, I don't want to give you any spoilers on them, experiencing the particular ones I'm thinking of for the first time without knowing is one of the best scares I've ever gotten in a game
>>341557404
>but is 3 really worth playing?
no
>>341551469
0-1 generally, maybe 2 once in a blue moon. The real issue for me is finding shit that actually manages to surprise you in a non-jumpscare way.
>>341554532
Alien: Isolation did such a good job of making me fear something I wasn't previously afraid of.
i tried playing Dead Space today, i did alright, made it to chapter 3 in under an hour and a half, with a buddy to help share the emotional load, i want to keep playing because its really good so far, but the tension and anxiety really get to me, to the point at which i pause for a few minutes and just pace around.

SOMA is fantastic, but it's more of a walking sim than Amnesia was.
The story makes it worth playing, but don't expect much gameplay other than running away from monsters.

I barely made it past the initial sewer and I just can't do the laboratory. It's too much.

>Chapter 3

It has pretty good music
Also don't forget to play the PSP version(use PPSSPP)
The version on Steam is a shitty version based on a previous iteration of the game. I have no idea why XSEED couldn't just do a port of the PSP version.
>>341556781
Dead Space is a lot of fun, but you have to turn the music off to make it truly scary.
Otherwise, the combat music starts playing whenever an enemy gets near you, ruining the tension entirely.

Get over the early 2000's flash graphics, and you'll have a spooky time

dead space isnt scary
its got some decent adrenaline pumpers (ie. jump scares) and the level design is creepy, but when it tries to do actual horror it just feels really cheesy and forced (the suicides and whatnot)

That part's piss easy if you're using keyboard and mouse, even with the janky controls that game has.
>>341559320

3 here.
Haven't played many horror games and that's not going to change.

Probably 1?
2 most of the time, 4 for certain games
Can't remember the last time a game really scared me though
Alien Isolation made me really tense and put me at a 2.5 pretty much the whole time though
>>341551469
I'm a solid 5 on this scale, and just can bring myself to try RE7 demo.
What are some good horror games with fucked up monsters and shit but little to no jumpscares? Doesn't have to be modern.
>>341560847
I'd like to say call of cthulhu but I wouldn't know about jump scares since I could never get past those guys that try to break inot your hotel room
>>341551469
I generally hover around 2 or 3
I have yet to be pushed to 4, probably because any fear I do feel tends to turn into annoyance if dying makes me reset far back, or if I waste a ton of time just plain hiding from the enemylooking at you Alien Isolation god damn i sure do love sitting in lockers all day and accomplishing nothing
I envy you guys who can be scared by video games. I've played Silent Hill, Amnesia, Penumbra, Condemned, etc., and while I've been able to appreciate them, I haven't felt anything like actual fear. The closest I've come was during "The Forest," and even then, it was on an intellectual level. Like, "indeed, this is effective horror."
I'd say I'm a 4, really I just want a fucking horror game with no jumpscares or atleast intentional ones
>>341560847
Silent Hill 2, 3, 4. Monsters are twitchy, spastic and overall their designs are freaky as fuck.
There's also like, no jumpscares in the original Team Silent series, with the inclusion of the series' monster-detecting items.
It also helps that there's a very big focus on story, characters, and even the town itself rather than on sp00py scares.
>>341560847
Silent Hill has some grotesque monsters and almost no jumpscares. The monsters in SH4 are kind of silly though.
2 if there are no jumpscares
5 if there are jumpscares
>>341561004
>>341561274
>>341561275
I'll have to check those out, I absolutely love the horror aesthetic and atmosphere but so many horror games I see rely on cheap scares and the only real tension comes from not wanting to get startled and fuck that. I loved the first Condemned is the second one worth checking out?
>>341551469
I want something scary under the sunlight.
>Muh darkness and shit.
>>341561525
2 is less scary and relies a bit too much on paranormal events, but it is still a good game.
Mostly it improves on the combat system of the first game.
If you loved the first one, then you may as well check out the sequel. Most people definitely don't hate it.
>>341561741
What would you suggest? Not knowing what's going on is a cornerstone of fear, so it's generally required that you have limited visibility. Even if the area's not dark, it'll be a forest, or a building with tight hallways that make it difficult to see ahead or around corners.
>>341559386
skiFree
Are there any games that are terrifying plot-wise? Just curious.
>>341561525
2 has the better story and whatnot, but the actual horror is less developed
3's story is a clusterfuck but it's significantly more scary than 2, like night and day difference
i never played much of 1
>play/watch horror movie
>get irrationally pissed off when a character does something fucking dumb
I love scary shit, and understand that if the characters were smart they wouldn't get themselves in stupid scenarios, but it still fucking pisses me off.
Suicide Forest and Babadook made me so angry, in the latter I just wanted the little shit of a kid to die.
In video games, i get equally mad when characters are dumb assholes that die almost immediately like brad from RE
I couldnt play the Alien game for PS1, the ambient was too terrifying and all those moans didn't help I was expecting an alien to come from nowhere and one-hit kill me
Never actually played it farther than the beggining so I wouldn't know better

Late reply but essentially for Siren there's mixed results; from what I've heard, it falls apart in the second half.
I believe it's one of the first horror games to use a 'Second Person Perspective', where you see the killer's vision rather than yours.
I mean, if it's 'free', then why not give it a shot?

> Alien is prowling around, looking for me.
> Hiding under a goddamn locker

Pure jump scares is kinda cheating though. Jumping is a natural reaction to something threatening popping in front of your face. Good games keep you nervous through atmosphere, and only use jump scares to keep you on your toes or send you into a panic.
What I really want is a game that can send you into a screaming panic through atmosphere alone.
>>341551469

>Pause it as a monster chases you. After a few seconds, it begins to walk again.
>Bonus points if these are only likely to occur on players who pause a lot during spooky parts
Let the player think he has a safe space, and then take it away or defile it. That's more unnerving than simply having no pause.

Because it usually results in walking simulators with tedious avoidance.
Once you figure out how to stop/avoid the mon, it is no longer scary.
It also means the mon has to be blind or slow enough for you to hide or run away from it, whereas a monster you can kill may be perceptive and fast because you are expected to take it on if you can't avoid it.

best horror game idea here
>you are a government agent tasked with the study and containment of paranormal phenomena
>you are assigned cases to investigate.
>details include location, witness testimonies, photographs of objects or bodies found at the scene, etc. They don't directly give you the cause of the case but give you indirect hints as to what happened
>gameplay consists of the player running around trying to piece together what happened for each case.
>you find and photograph evidence, interrogate witnesses, and discover clues as to what is behind the events all while trying not to get killed.
Basically x files but as a video game.

everything from ghosts to demons to aliens and skin walkers
the environments would need to be very well planned. I was thinking for an alien case their would be a segment where you are in a cabin owned by an astronomer and discover his research notes on strange lights
There would be various times where all the windows would light up with a bright blue white light and entities can be seen watching you from around doors like in communion
eventually you would find a hidden map made by the late astronomer leading somewhere up in the mountains where you find the entrance to a craft buried in the ground.
you enter the craft only to discover it is abandoned and there are dead alien bodies in podsand some live ones that wake up and jump at you
>>341571875

You missed out on the best level in the series.
I recently started a new playthrough of Dead Space, with 3 special conditions:

2) Headphones on, loud enough to drown out outside sounds.
3) Turn off the music, bump sound FX up.
These three things make for one HELL of a harrowing experience.

>have weapons
>ammo is scarce but you can maintain a decent stock if you explore thoroughly and exercise fire discipline
>monsters know your mag has a limited number of rounds
>they goad you into wasting ammo so they can rush you when you re-load
>you can still melee while re-loading
>monsters will try to fake you out when they rush you so they can take advantage of your being exposed after melee-ing
>stealthy monsters will throw rocks/debris to lure you into traps
>monsters eventually learn how to use weapons and better tactics
>start of with simple melee weapons
>learn to gun but have shit aim
>learn to aim
>learn to reload
>learn to flashlight in dark areas
>learn to grenade you when you're behind cover
>learn to small unit warfare
>learn to flank and advance under covering fire
>learn to summon back-up
>learn to patrol in small 2-3 man(monster?) fireteams when they can't find you

REmake is a real pinnacle of the real survival horror series, and a superb upgrade of the game that really coined the term.
I'd also recommend giving the Silent Hill games a shot again. Never heard SH2's puzzles causing anyone a problem, but lucky for you, the game has a separated Puzzle Difficulty setting. I'd go through the games in release order though.
You can get SH1-4 for PC now. Here's a neat guide, and the DL Links:

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" fix works as a no-cd crack as well, and is included in the pack.
In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.

I'm a 5, I get physically ill when I try to play horror games, which is a shame im such pussy because it locks out an entire genre.
I don't scream or anything, I just nope the fuck out whenever the game gets 2spooky.
>>341576437
>you mean 'would be' because it doesn't happen
I suppose it's relative to some degree;
The first Medal Of Honor on PSX, for instance, tripped me out when I realized enemies shot from behind cover and threw your grenades back at you.
The execution would have to be near flawless, but my dick would be diamonds if it happened
>>341551469
I'm probably a 6 seeing as I boughtFNAF it was before maximum autism fuck offand was spooked just by the ambient sounds. I got scared shitless by the giant 2 legged head fucker in STALKER too. Hell I get scared just by thinking about scary shit and end up seeing shit in the darkness
No one has mentioned Anna: Extended Edition yet. I really enjoyed the game; it has the right amount of scary, and lots of puzzles.
Just beat the sixth mission of Alien Isolation
The final bit was really a pain in the ass with all the bonus aliens hiding in all ceiling vents
>>341553029
None.
It's all about the proper mindest and conditions. Even the best horror game is going to be shit if you play in during the day, with no headphones, not alone and without immersing yourself.
>>341551469
I have this issue but i was able to play through the first 3 silent hill games with no problems (sh2 is also my favorite game). They dont have any jumpscares as they solely focus on atmosphere and story
I absolutely hate not being afraid of horror games or movies. I'm replaying silent hit origins on the PS2 and it's just a clunky puzzle game with bad combat to me.
I wish I was pussy
>>341556781
Even 1 and 2 are not really good as horrors. The game doesn't have much to offer and you get used to everything after an hour or so.
I am now almost done with Fatal Frame: Deep Crimson Butterfly and I loved it. Is FFIV worth importing?
>>341559386
Objectively? Either Amnesia Dark Descent or Fatal Frame II.
Subjectively? Anything that strikes in yuor own specific fears.
>>341561181
Sounds like you have the wrong attitude. Of course you are not going to be scared if you don't immerse yourself in the game and don't have the right conditions (dark, alone, headphones).
It would be like watching a comedy on a funeral.
>>341562225
SOMA is, on an existential level.
>got a vive some weeks ago
>usually never get spooked by horror games
>decide to try some zombie game in VR because the gun physics looked nice
>zombies are huge, towering over you
>slow and attack in packs
>they manage to sneak up on me several times
>drop the ball while trying to reload in panic
>eventually get the basics down and start breezing through it
Can't wait to see how horror games will evolve in VR, I just want a game with VR support from frictional games now.
>>341582381

I dont think this is true. I cant get scared when i use headphones in games such as silent hill that have very poweful sound design. I feel like the physical response you get from the sounds depicted in those games are extremely important. SOMA is more of a disturbing story than a scary game.
Dead Space also wasn't scary, it was just a fun shooter in a scifi horror setting.
If your game has good combat in it then it's a very bad horror game and you're a very naughty boy for even suggesting it's horrific beyond imagery alone.
i just want a game that's like system shock 2 with some alien: isolation in it

Stalker is horror with good gameplay. And no I'm not saying it's a really scary game but it can go from being tense to unnerving.
I'm usually a 2, like my post. I'm not sure what horror games need to actually spook me, but at least I get a good story from the non-trash ones.
>>341571347
I liked Spooky's house of horror but it has a horrible flaw. The problem is that if you progress too much and die, you get frustrated, so the fear of dying actually makes the game lenient.
>>341551469
I am a 5 for sure. Except I have learned its better to not play any games that scare me.
for the record I am scared by pretty much any game that has an ounce of spooky in it. The Witcher 3 I am currently on a break from as I am in a scary dark cave with fecking scary bitches that come out of the mist. I see them, I alt f4 like straight away.
I used to love speedrunning RE:make, but I had to have the volume down, and have an Avril Lavigne CD (the only one in my house) playing and lights on and a parent in the house. Every time I see a resident evil pic online I just hear WHYD YOU HAVE TO GO AND MAKE THINGS SO COMPLICATED
I love the occult though and all things scary but just the concept, I dont actually wana be scared. How do I fix this?
>>341590295
>Stalker is horror with good gameplay
This especially if you make yourself not save often and play on hardest difficulty. Its kinda stupid against human AI since they can headshoot you quite easily.
>>341551469
i'm like a 5.5 for games like outlast. My skill level drops so far that I'm usually not able to finish a game without help. No nightmares or anything though but that's because the game doesn't really scare me with it's ideas but it's more just a shut down of my fight or flight response during highly tense or stressful moments of the game. I'm more like a 2 for older survival horror like silent hill which focused mainly on creepy atmosphere instead of highly tense situations.

Silent Hill 2 is the only game I've ever put down multiple times out of an overwhelming sense of dread. I find the SH series to be great for that; it's a pretty amazing depiction of what Hell might be like.

>>341592869
Yeah pretty much.
FEAR's AI made great usage of pathfinding and maps. It really wasn't hard to do and the dev' documents show this and comment on it too. You can find little holes in it easily if you take the time to look but it's a well crafted illusion while most games today have no illusion at all and just show you the basic AI as is.
Since true AI isn't a thing it takes actual use of strategic arts to convince the player that the AI really is that smart using tons of small tricks and clever ways of it doing things. Because this takes time and creativity you don't see it anymore at all.
The best AI remains A-Life and it's brought down heavily by slav's shitty pathfinding. It's amazing how many good things are in STALKER I swear they must have made a deal with the devil because no engine that fucking unstable and buggy should've had that lighting quality and AI quality.
It's like they produced the most valuable gem in the world and then sunk it into SUPER GAUDY jewelry.
>>341591950
Feels like how it does when you take on in an airplane and the capsule is pressurized. Weird that an off beat can induce that.
>>341596950
To add on to this: Good AI is like a good magic trick, back AI is like a bad magic trick. If the audience can see how it's done then it's a bad trick. FEAR was a decent card trick that anyone could learn to do in an industry where people explain the trick every step of the way.

I would nope the fuck out every 10min.
Used to be a 5, but now I'm either 0 or 3-4 depending if I can actually get immersed in a horror game and take it seriously. Last one for 0 was that imscared game's steam release. I need to spend more time on horror games, I know it's a sin, but I haven't played a single SH game.
Just a quick thought on the side, I can't wait until someone dies from a heart attack caused by a VR jumpscare, just to see people panic about games killing people and shit again.

I'm mostly at 2 but a really good atmospheric game can get me slighty at 3. Games like Amnesia or Outlast don't really get me frightened but Silent Hill 2 and 3 caused me to feel uneasy because of the atmosphere. Clock Tower also works despite bieng a side scroller NES adventure game.
Are there more good psychological horror games? I've been thinking of getting Nightcry but the steam reviews are mixed.

Hardly ever play horror games but when I did FEAR, dead space or stalker it was more tension than fear. Around 3 or so. Slow and caution and hugging the walls and shit.
Not that I mind, I'm not big on horror but I fucking love that tension.
It all depends on the horror game. I'm normally the biggest pussy in the world, but if I have any sort of weapon to defend myself nothing shocks me. Dead Space was a great example of this, where I had friends who couldn't get through 1 or 2 but I had no issues.
Stuff like FNAF gets me because I'm glued to a chair and I'm only able to keep the murder at bay and not outright defeat it.

I'm now playing DS2 for the first time, and I've found that it's disturbing, tense and has extremely well designed enviroments, but the horror is kinda bad. It's just jump scares or completely safe passages where the lights go spooky andNicole screams at you or makes you do a QTE.That makes you jump, but it's not scary. It has no buildup.

Still, not alone.
Like whatever floats your boat but you need to understand that horror games are supposed to make you scared.
In order to be scared by something that is clearly fiction and not a real threat you need to immerse yourself in it. Talking/having otherp eople around you constatly breaks your immersion.
Not to mention humans are social animals and we subconsciously find great comfort in not being alone.

I understand and agree with what you're saying , but the points I made don't really apply to it, so let's review
>>RE and SH have god awful controls which are probably the scariest part of those games
This is just true, I find the controls absolutely horrifying and they basically kill my will to play the game. I still like watching a video or a stream of it since they're interesting games, I'm just not able to enjoy them myself
>>HL mods are mostly shooters which instantly don't make it scary and mostly rely on jumpscares
Most HL mods I see recommended have weapons and they're not just some weak-ass guns either. Having guns in a game just doesn't do it for me and I can't say I'm really scared when I'm eagerly awaiting to shoot some abomination's head off. Cry of fear or something like Nightmare House would be exceptions, but hopefully you get what I'm saying. I'm still open to suggestions when it comes to HL mods
>>everything else are unfinished indie walking simulator that also rely on jumpscares
