About to play this for the first time. Which character should I pick?

Story. There will be some parts told from Claude's perspective and some from Rena's. And a few parts where they split up.

A couple of characters are exclusive to which character you pick at the start. Claude gives you Leon the token whiny shota spellcaster, and Rena gives you Dias the brooding "psh, nothing personal" bishounen swordmaster.

Story differences and one or two characters. You'll follow the story of whichever character you pick up. Claude is some kidfrom spacewho wakes up in a strange land, and Luna is some girl from a small village who heads out on an adventure.
As for the other characters, unless there is one you specifically want, then don't worry about it too much. It's a lengthy game (~70 hours for main story, realistically) so you won't likely play through it a second time, so just pick the one which sounds more interesting.

If you want to experience less Claude then choose Rena, though even she becomes an irritating retard as the story goes by, but at least she's not as bad as Claude
Play Rena. Having Claude, Ashton, and Dias wipe everything is a damn amazing feeling.
The game was fucking incredible in how it let you manipulate every aspect of the game. Learning pickpocket early on to rob that one guy in Mars Village so you can maybe get the treasure box and opening it to maybe get the second strongest sword in the game just four hours into your save file was ridiculous.
Then there's the reverse side super ability where you can forge contracts and use them in hotels so that they become your property and never have to pay to rest there again. Or the forged medals you can create that can level you up to lvl 100 if you reproduce the medals with the photography ability.
They don't make them like this anymore

Claude. Rena does get a good character that Claude cannot get (and Claude gets a shit character, but hey you can leave the little cunt behind) but Rena's route basically misses a bunch of story and replaces it with nothing. Rena's unique story bits are just 'where is Claude?!' Disappointing.
Honestly, they should have just let Claude recruit Dias and not had Rena as a selectable main character. She adds nothing.

The PSP version is significantly better when emulated because you can rid of that gay-ass blur they smeared over everything

Only Claude and Rena are mandatory. Celine is forced into your party for the cross cave and Mars village but you can kick her back out after.

He has an opening cutscene which is a few minutes, and then dicking around on that one planet which is about 5-10 minutes depending on when you decide to open the menu and increase text speed.
They both have to deal with all the slow ass shit in arlia

You can, the rate is slow but I'd suggest it if you want to play rena and pickpocket.
My advice, don't rely too much on the mage characters.
They're pretty strong in the first half of the game, but because of the 9999 damage cap, that no spell hits more than once and the long cast time of later spells (not to mention the long spell animations that completely break pace) they fall off hard in the second half.

Shes the best, she has a party heal that doesn't stop the action so you can replace Rena. Spell casters are super weak and waste your time with shitty long spell animations.
