Pong clones, Asteroid clones, Space Invaders clones, Zelda clones, side-scroller clones, 3d platformer clones, third-person shooter clones, first-person shooter clones, open world clones. Strategy guides.

The day my FF9 guide kept telling me to go online for the answers was the day I realized that this guide would be the last one I ever bought.
>>
When a game came out, 99.90% of the time, it was finished. They included everything they could so they could impress people who bought it and maybe make a loyal customer. There might be a release afterwards that would fix bugs, but the original game was just done and bug tested and you didn't have to go online for micro updates every time.
Also, games are so fucking big now. I don't know how they fit dozens of hours of play on even SNES games, but my 14 gig PC games now can last maybe 10.

But for reals why did games, especially Japanese ones stopped using urban environment as the game's setting? And I mean I want the game to take place in a city through out. I am getting sick of that naturey shit.

Hell the last game I remember taking place entirely in a city was The World Ends With You.

Not just the manuals, but the hand-drawn artwork they often contained. Especially in a lot of older games when the graphics were still somewhat primitive (particularly on 8-bit consoles) and they have to improvise on how the characters look. Nowadays they just use CGI for everything.

i played gta4 recently and was surprised that i could do missions in other ways from how they tell me. the one where you have to take a pic of the guy in the ball courts and then shoot him, for example - climbed to a roof 2 blocks away and sniped him; no chase, no stars, end of mission. gta5 was real cookie cutter type shit, though

>>
>>341549308
Yeah, 4 has a couple moments like that, but most missions are straightforward enough that you can't mix it up too much. 5 was definitely worse in that regard, though. There were so many arbitrary restrictions.
>>
>>341549168
That was back when "indie" just meant "game made by a small dev team" instead of "pretentious artsy game". "Indie" was just an adjective instead of a genre.

GTA isn't the game for it, but I like when a game is so on rails that they compensate for the little things that you might do. In the mission where you're sniping with Trevor out in the Airfield, if you get the lights because you know what to do from the last time, there's a line acknowledging you did that.
>>
>>341549861

Oh yeah, small teams where they made games they wanted to play. It was still a gamble and they had to be accessible to an audience I guess, but comparing Fallout 1 to Fallout 3 shows how little Bethesda knew about the franchise. It took the first layer, how it looks, and made that the whole game. I guess they didn't like having different builds and consequences and reason to play the game over again.

I miss Videogame magazines.

VG Journalism actually used to be journalism. not overglorified blogging.

It used to involve actually going to an publication's office and writing a review for a game or an event you went to, or that new preview sony sent your magazine

now literally any social reject can so "videogame journalism" from the safety of their own home, never having to leave and actually be part of society.

I get that it's always been a lot of bullshit, but it feels like there used to be actual enjoyment behind videogame journalists they were gamers too, and as such they reviewed games as gamers would.

Yeah, but pushing a sprite-based system to its graphical limits took far less resources than the modern attempts at photorealism that eat budget (and thus make each game more of a financial risk), and usually resulted in interesting stylistic decisions.

Depends on what difficulty you were playing - the parry timing windows on harder difficulties made that impossible. The fact that it was directional instead of a single button mash made fighting groups more interesting than one-button parry games.

And no matter what difficulty you were on, mashing light attack/parry on Sundowner would get you absolutely killed. If you'd been using it as a crutch the whole game, you were screwed.

Revengeance also had a much higher skill ceiling. Sure, you could parry mash to victory, but you could dodge and do interesting combos, whereas Bamham-style combat is always attack>parry>attack>parry>gadget>parry... Nobody posts Batman combo videos, because you can't do anything interesting enough to be worth recording.
>>
>>341554165
Most of my dislike of the Batman combat comes from the fly-between-enemies combos, because I don't feel like I have any control over what's going on, as opposed to a cancel-based combo system, where a given input will always get me the same attack.

And the relentless swarm of somewhat shittier imitators: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AV9W2ZdmjU
>>
>>341553595
It's a lot slower than actually playing, it only works on unarmed enemies, and if you're doing the challenges, you're not going to get any points that way. I think you might also get less XP if you're less flashy, but I'm honestly not sure.

The combat is really simple, sure, but that webm isn't indicative of most fights in the game.
