Both games have fucking horrible stories, but MGS 4 is a far bigger offender not only because the story is more retarded, but also because it was the story that ruined the rest of the series by fucking up characterizations and events from the previous games including Ocelot, the Patriots, The Boss, Zero, Para-Medic, Sigint, Merryl and Eva. MGS V, by comparison, can't ruin what is already ruined beyond repair and merely told its own retarded wacky story that is really not that important to the overall continuity, let alone ruinous to it.
>GAMEPLAY
MGS V has better gameplay by virtue of having any gameplay at all. Whereas 4 has good systems, it doesn't use those systems properly anywhere, there are only two hours worth of core stealth gameplay at the very most and then there are the boss fights (which are admittedly pretty good), stupid action sequences and then of course the "gameplay" by which I mean the cutscenes, codec calls, microwave hall, all of Shadow Moses until the boss fights, all of Act 3 until the boss fight, etc. It doesn't even have fucking VR missions so the only way you can experience any of the gameplay is by playing MGO (Which always was and always will be nothing but a novelty that isn't really that fun to play). By comparison, MGS V also has pretty great systems which you actually get to fucking use while traveling on the open world and accomplishing missions. The mission where you rescue Kaz already accounts for all the stealth gameplay in all of MGS 4 and that's fucking pathetic. "MGS 4 is a movie" is an exaggeration, but it's very much founded in reality.

I like mgs4, I love the theme of Snake having nothing left and literally volenteering for suicide, its really under used and Snakes cool hero backstory gives it even more. I will agree the gameplay is pretty shit but if you played the games up to it first then you're mainly in it for the world of Metal gear. It's a good closer.
Mgs3 is my favorite though, I love the James bond feel Kojima went for. Also the various areas keep the game interesting which I think its where mgs2 falls flat for me, it's not bad but knowing the story I think it's going to be harder to play a second time knowing all it's twists.

Peace walker has great character and story, Kojima makes up for the lack of art direction in mgs4 with the beautiful comic like cutscene. The grinding shit and it's a shame it carried over to Mgsv. I watched every trailer a million times, read every news article that came out and circled jerked over the game with /v/ for months.
V did not have a chance but.
I actually like PW more than V, V improved PW in every single way gameplay wise but the story suffered for it, less cut scenes and all the characters in the game felt shadows of themselves or in the case of the new ones not fleshed out at all.
V suffered because of the whole konami thing, it depressed me to think what the game could have been.
V was also a lot more darker and grim, listening to the tapes in PW makes you think of MSF a really happy, fun and cool place to hang out even though it was a miliatry base.
In V all that shit was gone.
I am still bummed out about Paz, I hated the bitch at the end of PW but listening to her diaries, the tapes of her getting tortured and raped and the side missions in V of medic going crazy with guilt.

Fuck the first games repetitive shit. And fuck anything past AC3 where movement controls are so fucking simplified. You can't control height of your jump and can't do extra reach grabs. They also got rid of 3rd movement speed option for jogging and starting with AC3 you can no longer control whether your character climbs shit randomly because it's no longer activated by sprinting so sometimes whether running, jogging (pre-AC4), or walking you end up sometimes climbing shit for no reason leading to getting caught and/or losing targets.
It's so annoying and I think "Why the fuck did they remove play options?" Fuck casualization. This isn't even about difficulty... it's about removing features that no one even had to use just so that people didn't accidentally use them because they were too fresh to test the games mechanics and learn.

The only true objective rating is
1 = 2 > 3 > GZ > PW > 4 = V
1 & 2 are near perfect video games, 3 is the most original, GZ is GOAT level design, PW's story is great, and both 4 and V have the best gameplay of the series but it's underused
