I'll probably get shit for this but Gnomoria is a good way to learn the gameplay/style before diving into Dorf Fort. It's nowhere near as deep as DF but is MUCH more newbie-friendly, both in how to actually DO shit and in interface and userfriendlyness. Once you've gotten that down, DF won't be that bad to learn, and will be much more rewarding/potentially hilarious.

I would recommend downloading the lazynewbpack. http://lazynewbpack.com/
Its a mod manager that has dwarf therapist and dfhack which are the two big mods that dramatically improve ease of use. You don't NEED the mods, but they make the game much less clunky, especially when you get above 100 dwarfs.

to play basic dwarf fortress you need to understand the following

Last time I played DF, one of my random worker dwarves decided to pick a fight with the tortoise, but the tortoise promptly hid in its shell and the guy wouldn't give up, so he spent half a season punching and biting the tortoise and kept passing out from exhaustion and waking up and going right back to it

I finally decided enough is enough so I drafted one of the hunters into a squad and ordered him to go kill it, and after running out of bolts on the shell the hunter just bashed it with his steel crossbow so hard that he broke the shell clean off, then he, the original dwarf, and some other passerby all chased the terrified, injured tortoise down and beat it into a mutilated, mangled pulp

Then my game crashed

Not really, it's trivially easy to make a completely impregnable fortress, even if you don't even have any weapons in your fort it's very simple to set up drawbridges so nobody can get inside and just have everyone stay indoors until the invaders either get bored and fuck off or get killed by a trade caravan's guards

To add to this I once had a fort where just for a fun thing I dug down and completely hollowed out a z-level around 60 or so, then built a stone city, brought water down for farms, and had another area set up for cave tree farming, and just sealed the top off and had my fort completely self-sufficient, only ever opening it for new migrants and occasionally traders

Once you know what you're doing you don't even need access to the surface and it's easy to make a completely invasion-proof self-sustaining fortress

There are lots of ways, what I like to do is, once I'm sure of a person being a vampire, I have a special room I order them to go stand in
Once they're inside, drawbridges raise to seal it, a pump starts pouring water into the chamber until it's completely full, then a hatch in the center of the room is opened and the vampire is flushed with the water down a long shaft and lands in the caves where the fall kills him instantly, then I throw up a stone slab for him somewhere so he doesn't come back as a ghost

I had some problems with a few thralls before I finished my wall, but after that it was pretty standard. Seal off from the world and live a nice and quiet dorf live. Until the cloud came. When it came, everyone on the surface turned into thralls and started slaughtering the other dorfs. I managed to build a little wall on the last layer of my fort with only 3 remaining dorfs. All of them went mad and killed themselves though.

the problem is when you have a waterfall. dwarves will see that the water were the waterfall...falls...is shallow enough that they can walk through it.

I start by woodlands, 2miner/1mason, 1carpenter, 2farmer, 1mayor/organizer/hitler

Set up small base with small stockpile, produce depot, Mass produce bed/wood carts.

Wait for first trade oppurntunity, set up farms and walls. Trade every wood cart worth 50c for any good gear. Since I made atleast 50 wood carts of varying quality, easy peezy mode activated.

Since now my base is worth a bit, migrants up the ass, assign them needed jobs like smelter/armorer/weaponsmith. Now i have unstopple militia. GG

Best animals are two turkeys, then a dog or two as hunting assistance or sentry.

Eh I just make 1-3 people in the first few migrant waves into hunters and usually by the time I actually need something dead they're highly skilled marksdwarves, this is good enough until I get around to making a barracks and training some soldiers

Eh, I don't know, I've been playing DF for years (with breaks).

I figured out most of it, can create perfectly-efficient fortress, self-sufficient, with unimaginable treasuries, fully covered with engravings, golden furniture, extremely powerful military who can easily wrestle dragons to death.
After reaching 200 population I usually get bored with the game, as no legendary creature can really posses a danger, most of underground is cleared and made safe.
I also became bored with superconstructions.
I miss my beginner's time with DF, when building a raising bridge was a huge problem.

Saying all that, I still fail to understand carts and its transportation over Z-levels.

if you have to use tilesets, you are NEVER going to be able to get very deep into DF. don't bother playing it if you can't figure out the ascii. you're simply too stupid to play this game, if so.
