The writers are growing up and a lot of thing view parenting as a life-changing event so they're putting it into their narratives.

There is a good reason why japanese games fell from the throne. The age of the snes and ps1/ps2 is over. People like me who were teens and knew nothing better at the time got older. Juvenile stories about conflicted teens trying to grow up a little does not appeal to us anymore. Most of the stories are cringeworthy with a lot of cheesy dialogue and awkward situations and relationship that are so forced and unbelievable. The average age of a gamer is 35 years old now.

In terms of gameplay the characters trade lines to each other mostly to guide player to the game world. The kid and Kratos trade lines to give the player a hint about their objective e.g follow the deer. They also trade lines to give the player combat cues. Did you know that a huge bulk of Cortana's in game lines are about guinding the player through the levels and only 20% are related to the story! Normies prefer this way than looking at a whole list of objectives.

It gives you the feelios and it's the easiest way to give bald angry man some characterization.
Because most people have a soft spot for kids, so it's easy to form an emotional attachment. Additionally, it's a sort of variation on the "saving a damsel in distress" cliche, since we aren't allowed to just rescue a princess anymore and most of us really want to just do that. You can also have the added benefit of watching the child grow and sometimes become your successor. Parent-child stories can be really good when they're well written.
The problem is that most video games have really shitty writers. Like, incredibly fucking garbage. This means the child will be unlikable, ruining the entire point, and they'll probably focus mostly on emotional bullshit when most players would rather just be punching the people who made their daughter cry.
