Is DOOM 3 a prequel? I've played it so many times but the DOOM timeline is so confusing.
Can someone explain the whole timeline to me?

DOOM 3 technically is and isn't a prequel.
It goes Doom, Doom 2, Doom 64
But because of how the time line of the game is setup, Doom 3 TECHNICALLY is a Prequel but in the sense that if it is, it fucks with the credibility of timelines between each game because the novels are what were referenced to verify this information.
Realistically, and from fan speculation it's said that Doom 3 is either a remake of what DOOM1 is, or it serves as a prequel leading to Doom 64 being the last in the releases before DOOM2016
Doom 3 wouldn't have done well if Doom wasn't already a popular series.
Doom 3 was not nearly as memorable as the initial installations.
Doom 4 suffers the same fate.
