So my impressions.
I'm impressed already. As someone who actually learned how to play Sticker Star, it's nice to finally see a new one.
Paint mechanic looks fun, and a bit more accessible than the Sticker mechanic. Those of you who think TTYD's combat is 'better' because it's less complicated should be pleased by this. Puzzles seem to be a bit less confusing as well, which is honestly an improvement. SS's main problem was it's incredibly obtuse puzzle solutions that don't make a whole lot of sense to first time players.
And of course, it's nice to see a little variety in the plot as well. Getting mailed a toad was fairly interesting.

You get paint for defeating enemies, so at the very least the people too retarded to realize that you get more coins by beating enemies stop complaining about that.
In fact, this game seems to have addressed a lot of the real problems with Sticker Star. Combat seems like it has a little more depth, the paint mechanic has a lot of potential, puzzles seem less insane and reliant on different objects that may or may not be on the other side of the map, that sort of thing.

The combat itself seemed fine in SS. Not being able to choose targets wasn't even an issue if you actually used the slots. No exp is not a problem in itself either. Money is a fine substitute if there's something good to spend it on. It's just that most people seem to hate the idea of consumable attacks (aka weapon durability in a sense), and you could only use coins to buy stickers (and use the slots which were easily abused anyway).
Unlike most games in with weapon durability though, it was too easy to circumvent combat entirely and they gave you way too many weapons so that it was rarely a problem anyway. Even if you did get into a normal battle, you could run away at no cost and the enemy would despawn. Furthermore, coins weren't very valuable because almost all stickers were available for free and were a renewable resource in stages.
These issues could be easily fixed. Everyone hating on consumable attacks and no exp just wants the same shit over and over. Hating on the lack of story or unique characters is fine. I don't really care about either of those, but I can understand that other people do.
