To be honest, world war I outside of the western front would be really hard to make an interesting game out of.
The Western front is where all the novel, if imperfected technology comes about and the project should really stick to that and not get blown up in size.
Smaller scale projects tend to attract cult following due to being "exclusive" as opposed to big blockbusters.

In the end it ended up being a Search and Destroy game type from CoD where everyone holes up at an objective room waiting for the other team to inevitably break in from 1 to 3 of the possible entrances they can make after everyone blocks the room off.

They could've started the campaign (and introduced the game in general) with gameplay where you control a Frenchman on August 22, 1914, the day in which outdated tactics and equipment cost the French 27'000 lives.
Dressed in bright red and blue uniforms, you start off marching in a huge, tightly packed formation down an open field, Napoleonic style. Suddenly, German artillery and machine guns open up. Men around you are dying everywhere. German troops are at your flank, and you have to escape the killing grounds by running from shell hole to shell hole and fight off a German ambush with nothing but your overly long Lebel rifle and bayonet.
Instead we got Michael Bay bullshit.

I've enjoyed BF4 on PS4 for 150 hours now, it can be really fun depending what kind of matches you get.
