That still exists, but it doesn't fuck you endlessly. If you're a completionist and want to get that extra bit of raw for your weapon, you'll have to go find gems. Otherwise, you can just chill and never have to worry about rare parts.
I will point out that you DO need plates though in some instances, but farming plates is absurdly easy in MHX. I only have maybe 60 hours in the game, but I have at least 4 of every low rank rare part from nothing but simply raising my HR and doing key quests.

This year's MH will either be MHXG or a non 3DS title judging by the 2 million sales target. Popular japanese blog Hachima Kikou is calling a Vita release. Now MHX had a 2.5 milluon target so it makes sense that the G game would be lower. But other than that 2 million is a tad bit low for a new non rehashed 3DS release.

Why are people complaining about MHX and calling it casual before even playing it?
I'm HR 80 and have been using SnS, HH, and Hammer.
This game has a very gentle start but the high end frenzied/deviant monsters are just as hard as ever.
Stances offer greater customization options and give each weapon 4 unique move-sets.
If you want to be agile and jump/mount a lot use aerial,
If you get hit too much and need better mobility/positioning use adept,
if you want to come on and slam and welcome to the jam use striker.
If you are boring and like vanilla flavor use guild.

All in all, the offensive hunter arts are a minor boost that are just barely better then normal attacking and you'll only be able to use them once or twice over a long fight. There's nothing cuhraaaazy or overpowered about them.
It's dumb to complain about improved evasion and dodges, if you're a veteran player you shouldn't be getting hit even without adept or hunter art evade. I was nearing the end of 7 star online before changing out of the store bought leather armor.

Cats have a bunch of their own unique quests each rank that hunters can't go on, but you can go on any hunter quest as a cat. Also you can unlock playing as cats before you even complete your first quest as a hunter, so you can play from the very start as one if you like.
Your cats can equip a helmet/armor and weapons made from scraps. There's pretty much as many cat equipments as there is for hunters and their skills and perks can be customized. Skills/perks are unlocked upon reaching a certain level or by hunting specific monsters.
The cats are probably not the best for absolutely in/maxing your stats but there's no reason you can't play through the entire game as one without any problems, they do about the same damage as a hunter and get a few tricks that hunters can't do like the poison pitfall trap and the 'Rath-of-meow' tank
