Maybe in a generation or two. Since the 360/PS3 gen we've been stuck at 1080p because devs know console won't go any higher so they cram more complex effects in game to exploit new generatiosn of GPUs. But now that console are starting to make a push for 4k (even though it most likely won't be true 4k for now), the standard should evolve.

I can play the latest games, Doom, Assassins Creed Syndicate, Fallout 4, Witcher 3 at 4k at maybe about 27-30fps
We're not there yet, even SLI has issues, especially in games not optimized for that
