For some reason it looks better in the actual gameplay compared to cutscenes, but it's mostly just a texture thing. But i guess they had to make some compromises to make it run at 60 with big areas, all those enemies and shit

Wrong. All 4 endings on Hard, only the first one offered a bit of challenge. Most of the time you cheese with Dark Gluttony and click spam Dark Blast, no issues.

>>341406507
The gameplay doesn't look amazing at all. What we've seen is very basic, very short, and currently not even MGR tier. It could be much better in full, but that's not what we've seen. Open worlds and quests are nice for certain types of games. Not for Plaction games. Maybe they can make it work, but most likely they won't based on the fact no-one ever has before.

I'm expecting (and will be happy with) it being on a level with MGR. Suggesting it's going to topple Bayo or W101 because it has a nice story or OST is just silly, Anon.

It's literally MGR with a skirt fused with bits of Nier. Even has similar animations, the heel sword kick thing is nearly identical to Raiden's.

Not to mention MGR combat wasn't anything special anyway. Automata has already shown variety in ranged attack and real-time weapon switching, which is all stuff that MGR failed at.
>>
>>341407469
The animations are actually a quiet different, they more fluid and not as heavy and most of them are pretty much just ballet and other dances combined with weapons

>>
>>341403241

>>
>>341407740
I don't think Platinum's trying to get into anything. Scalebound's just Kamiya having money thrown at him and doing whatever he wants with it (supposedly; it's what he's always done before but MSoft are Capcom-tier bastards when it comes to meddling so who knows what's going on behind the scenes) and Automata's just a case of MGR; they had everything down except for the gameplay so hired Plat for it.

If someone came to them tomorrow and said we want you to make some RPGs for this amount of money I have no doubt they'd do it, but at the same time I don't think that's their goal.
>>
>>341408316

We don't know who approached who to work together.
>>
>>341409520
Square came to Platinum asking if they'd like to work on a game with them, Platinum responded by saying they'd like to work on Nier, so technically both approached one another.
>>
>>341409520
Sqaure most likely made the first step
They want Nier to sell, so they want it to have better combat and overall good gameplay and Platinum is both cheap and works fast
>>
>>341409520
>MGR had RPG elements? Genuine question.

No, I'm likening the two because MGR was its own thing before Platinum but they couldn't get the combat right with the people they had so they hired Platinum to do it for them.

Nier was greatly loved for everything but it's gameplay.

continuing my thought... what if the "happy ending" is all based on a lie the game is telling you and you need to unlock the actual truth, which leads to despair.

I know I'm talking out of my ass, but that's an option I would like to see.
>>
>>341412218

Considering what's happened in past games, it's very likely the worst ending will be the hardest to unlock. Every game Taro has been director of has the most horrendous endings locked behind hours of grind. Especially ending E of DOD1.

You had to max level every single weapon in the game, which means you had to go through all the bullshit involved in just unlocking the fucking things.
>>
>>341412559
>You had to max level every single weapon in the game
No, you just needed to collect them, but that's a feat in itself as there are situations that there's no possible way you'd know without a guide. I think there's one where you had to wait for 15 minutes before a weapon box appeared or kill over a certain about of enemies within the first 5mins of a level.

>The original Nier asked players to complete the game three or four times to completion to uncover the full story; each playthrough would yield new bits of information and fresh perspectives on its characters, adding depth to the narrative. When asked if Nier: Automata would have the same layout, Taro said the team is planning something similar, but not quite along the lines of needing multiple playthroughs.

Sounds to me like it'll employ the Drakengard kind of alt route selection where you are plopped with little explanation into alternate timelines with weird differences.

That's kinda what happens in Nier. Ending 1 is a normal happy ending, Ending 2 adds a flashback and character epilogue. Ending 3 continues the game where it would've stopped to show what happens to another character and 4 is an alternate end to 3. Each ending more depressing than the last.

Yeah "ending E" basically turns ending D into a happily ever after thing but we have no idea if it's canon.

The idea is that Papa Nier would choose C to care for his daughter while Brother Nier would choose D because he would fall in love with Kaine. I like to think that Papa Nier might also have feelings for Kaine since they both lived a hard life and it's his way of repenting his shade-murdering sins in a sense, by giving his life to save a half-shade. He might feel like this whole time he failed as a father and that Yonah might be better off with the hardened but potentially motherly Kaine. I dunno, that's how I thought about it. It still felt really sad tho.

>>
>>341419002
>was pretty soul crushing in a way that I wasn't really expecting even going into it with knowledge of what would happen,
As I mentioned yesterday, that is a matter of perspective. You are unable to use that character's name again, right? That means that character has been permanently recorded into the game's database, a memorial. Your "100% completion" is now marked in the game. Yes, your files are gone, but the files come and go. The name is acknowledged by the game itself is far more eternal than flimsy save files that could have been written over at any time.

Hence, happy ending. By not existing, your character left a void behind that was an exact shape of himself. And that void is proof enough of his existence.
>>

>>
>>341419882
The way I saw it, C results in Nier losing everything but his daughter while D results in Kaine and Yonah potentially living long, happy lives without having to remember any of the bad stuff. Of course E sort of throws out that last bit but it still makes sense in terms of motivation for Nier.
>>
>>341420109
True. Except Emil who I think is immortal. And Ending E Nier since his gestalt is dead, yet was somehow recreated from memories which might imply he's not a normal replicant. And maybe Kaine, I was never totally clear on Kaine's status towards the black scrawl either pre or post Ending D.

Which might set the scene when Yoko Taro said they might be coming back or at least mentioned in Automata.
>>
>>341419882
D fits Papa Nier cause I think at that point he just didn't want anyone else to die and he might have seen Kaine as maybe a surrogate daughter so he wouldn't have wanted to kill her when there was another option.
>>
>>341420332
Maybe Nier. Nier links with Drakengard but only in a very loose, tangential way so it's not required.

Drakengard 3 has some themes and imagery very close to Nier though so who the fuck knows if Automata will reach back to Drakengard 3.
>>
>>341420952
I see, at least it's not a convoluted mess like KH.
There's no redeeming that games story.
>>
>>341420827
She was just possessed by a shade and it removed itself somehow so she should be fine, but she should've at least died of old age by the time Automata begins. Same for E Nier.
>>
>>341421248
Which reminds me, what exactly did Tyrann do and why did it require completely erasing Nier from existence? Was that ever explained?
>>
>>341421128
I'll tell you the Drakengard connection in Nier since it's really not a big deal or spoiler to the rest of the story:

At the very start of Nier, the prologue basically shows you that the modern world has faced some sort of apocalypse. You learn from loading file notes and shit that it was basically some sort of disease or bad thing that happened or something. That something was one of the endings of Drakengard, in which you follow an ancient elder god to modern Tokyo and kill it but die in the process. Either the elder god, your dragon or both of your remains somehow cause the sickness that kickstarts the story of Nier. Really, it doesn't matter since you could replace that backstory with "zombie apocalypse" or "bird flu" and the story still makes sense, society collapses and humans do desperate things to survive.

Also about Drakengard 3: something similar to the elder God returns and there's post-apocalyptic imagery similar to Nier and even robots kinda, and the manga spinoff even has something like the disease. However, Drakengard 3 very clearly outs itself as a prequel that exists in its own timeline and doesn't directly lead into any of the other games, so it might not impact any future game. The game basically involves alternate timelines n shit.
>>
>>341421248
Yeah, it was mainly that I didn't understand what erasing yourself to save her did. Like, did that give her a new soul? Is she a full human now? Does she even need her own gestalt anymore? Does she keep some part of her shade-induced superhuman strength? Does that mean she's a super-human? What exactly happened to Tyrann? Those sorts of questions were what I had in mind.
>>
>>341420332
>>341421128
To answer your main question simply, you might need to play the first Nier. However, Nier Automata apparently takes place hundreds of years in the future, so you might not actually need to know the backstory to get the main plot. Just like how you don't really need to know about Drakengard to get the main plot of Nier 1, even though Drakengard is the backstory because it was hundreds of years ago.
>>
>>341421672
D3's ending A leads to Drakengard. The disease in D3 is the same as in D1, and most likely related if not also the same as NieR's.
The grotesquerie queen's remains caused the White Chlorination Syndrome in NieR's world, while the corpses of Caim and Angelus contained traces of magic that were researched to bring magic to our own world, in hopes of findinng a way to counter the WCS.

Not exactly, it leads into the spinoff manga Drag-On Dragoon Shi ni Itaru Aka and novella series all collectively called Drag-On Dragoon 1.3, in which Drakengard 1 happens but with very different outcomes (Furiae makes a pact with a dragon to kill Caim in Ending A of 1.3 for example).

My only concern is whether it will be as stylisticly experimental as the first one? First had moments of 1D, 2D, a written choose your own adventure part, and a lot of other stuff.

This game looks great, but if they scrapped all of the above, then my interest has considerably waned

Firstly character action is still the stupidest genre name to have ever existed. Secondly it's done nothing to show it even comes close to the depth of DMC or Bayo, or even MGR for that matter. Being able to do more things doesn't automatically make something deeper or more complex, see Legend of Korra for the perfect example of that.

Game's looking good but hailing it as doing everything MGR did but better because it has some features MGR didn't when so far all we've seen is the bare-bones of a work-in-progress is just far too presumptuous.

Just out of curiosity whilst we're here, people in the thread excited for this game, how important would you consider gameplay to be on a scale of 1-10, compared to story and art design?

I never thought TW1s combat was bad, it was just what it was. Ironically Drakengard 1s is very similar with rythm based combos.

I dont know maybe I just take games for what they are.

Also, if you actually want to experience the story/characters in full you will need to actually play the games. Theres a good bit of shit you can miss in an LP, especially with Nier, but then theres a whole layer of feeling lost if you metely watch a game. Thats why I dont undersrand this LP generation, its deliberately choosing an inferior experience when you dont have to.
