Thinking of playing Silent Hill for the first time.
Is the HD collection really that awful? Is it still bad today?
SH2 is alright, but SH3 is still an abomination because it was never patched in any way, the dev team dissolved after getting out a substantial patch for SH2

i'd rather play it on ps2 or emulate it, the pc ports are not all that well made either.

HD Collection removes a lot of the atmosphere and texture so all of the levels look really clean and sterile. Also it's buggy and audio d-syncs.
HD collection only includes Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3.
You can play 2 first since it's a stand alone series. You should play 1 before 3 because 3 is a sequel to 1.
4,5 are stand alone
Origins is a prequel to Silent Hill 1.
Shattered Memories is an alternate reality of Silent Hill 1
Downpour is stand alone. The sidequests are better than the main game.

don't waste your time, once a shit always a shit. Either emulate a PS2 or spend the time to get the PC versions running. There was an guide for that but I don't it with me, hopefully you can find or someone will post it.

Never happened to me and I played Silent Hill 2 and 3 HD for the first time this year. My only background with the series is Silent Hill 1 and that was it. I really liked Silent Hill 2 and 3.
The remaining technical issue with Silent Hill 2 HD is the framerate and less variance in fog density. Silent Hill 3 HD suffers from an unlocked framerate that is 30 to 60 FPS at any given time.
Silent Hill 2 HD is the more preserved game in the collection, with 3 HD taking more changes than it should have according to the fans with the redone script and audio. I like it, but you may not like the new voices.
It's an incompetent port that is playable. It could have been much more but if this is your only option, I still recommend them.

The only thing I still don't like about the HD version of 2 is the game resuming when coming out of the pause menu before the screen fades back in entirely.

the aspect ratio for the games is screwed up so it looks stretched during cutscenes
several textures are flat out missing
they hired talentless voice actors to redub the games since they didn't want to pay the original actors for the rights, and they even fucked up some of the music which is the worse thing you could possibly do to a silent hill game

Mary's alright when she plays fitting characters, like the Major, but she was definitely out of line with stomping on Guy's feet. Troy can be amusing at times, but certainly does fall into the realm of being "samey" in his roles, like Nolan North does. Laura's pretty good as sexy characters, but is pretty silly as boys since it just sounds like she's trying to take a dump.

The only role I've genuinely like Troy Baker in was in Sengoku Basara, oddly enough. His Ocelot was 2Texan4me, and everything else I've heard from him was too samey, like you said. He's good, but it feels like he just doesn't try hard enough, or maybe directors don't ask enough of him.
