Will VR ever be more than a gimmick?
>>
>>341361910
When you stop being poor, maybe.
>>
>>341361910
yes but without the motion control bullshit

>>341361910
nope.

fuck, 20 years after this console dropped like a piece of shit, faux-3D is still a gimmick.
>>
>>341361910
no

>shitpost what you can't afford
Will /v/ ever stop being a poor shitter?

>Will the biggest jump in videogame technology since 3D games ever be more than a gimmick?

Bitch, this is the most revolutionary thing happening since Mario 64.
>>
I don't know, can you check this 6 for me?
>>
>>341363429
it's not really a jumpo
>>
>>341363429
because you actually have to heavily downgrade the graphics in order to have VR game working on current gen hardware
>>
yes in 2035 when the tech is there
>>
Pretty hard to tell at the moment. I hope so.
>>
Maybe when retards stop having their mouths gaping open for promotional photos and videos, people will take it seriously.
>>
>>341362234
>virtual boy
>virtual reality
Pick one

The virtual boy didn't have motion, 360 look everywhere integration. So your comparison is dumb as hell
>>
>>341361910
no chance. if it's the future of gaming, then gaming is dead.
>>
>>341365508
the Virtual Boy was more of a "system that attempted to project games in 3D" than a "virtual reality system"

my post was implying that, like what the VB was trying to do (and what the 3DS is trying to do now), virtual reality will tank
>>
>>341362234
Virtual Boy is to VR what Sticker Star is to the Paper Mario series
>>
>>341362234
There's nothing remotely VR about the Virtual Boy.

>>341365074
You also had to heavily downgrade graphics to have 3D games back when they first showed up. What about it?
>>
>>341366042
What makes you say that? Your only justification so far was comparing it to the VB which you've just said isn't even an accurate comparison.
>>
>>341361910
Not while it remains so uncomfortable and clunky.
>>
>>341362147
>motion control bullshit

Don't let past attempts make you cynical. Motion controls work perfectly with VR because the controllers are 1:1 with your hands and allow you to directly interact with the game world.
>>
It's fantastic for flight or driving simulators. Anything where you're in a chair in the game and real life.
Walking around with it is meme/10 for decades at least.
>>
Call me when you can link it with your nerves and get sensory feedback
>>
>>341366773
As long as it's still weightless and without any sort of feedback it will just add to VR's problems.
>>
>>341366358
i meant that both are similar, in that both what the VB was trying to accomplish and VR are fads that are trying to turn gaming into more of a gimmick than a pastime. that's the similarity.
>>
with a controller (or flight stick / steering wheel) it's great, don't like the motion controllers, they'll eventually have actual gloves though
>>
>>341367353
I bet you think 4K is a gimmick too.
>>
>>341367708
4k IS a gimmick.
170Hz 1440p is way better.
>>
>>341367708
4k isn't even anything. Just a meme.
>>
>>341365074
that just because of the bigger FOV i think

>Just a meme.
That word has lost all fucking meaning.
>>
>>341367275
Still miles better than holding a joypad and pushing buttons for pre-animated actions.
>>
>>341367708
no

everything is a gimmick
>>
>>341368060
word "meaning" lost all of it's fucking meaning.

When did video games become all about immersion?

I haven't seen a single VR game that looked interesting enough to make me consider it.
>>
>>341361910
is that Captain Vidya?
>>
>>341361910
No but it could work as a portable tv
>>
>>341366996
walking only has potential in arcades 2bh
>>
I think at first it'll be a gimmick, but eventually that's where gaming is going whether now or a decade from now. I'm staying old school as long as I can.
>>
>>341368554
>When did video games become all about immersion?
Literally since they were invented. Are you being serious?
>>
>>341368554
after cinema, books, music, etc. have become about immersion
>>
>>341361910
>a wii taped to your face
>>341369014
sure games are about immersion, why play if not to forget how shit the world around you is, a wii taped to my face wont immerse me more than a screen over my field of view though
>>
>>341368554
Sorry to be that guy who says "you need to try it yourself" but you need to try it yourself.

They actually have to tone things done because some situations can feel too extreme for players in VR. Making them look really tame on a flat screen.

Also devs and players are finding their feet with a relatively new medium and just marvelling over the novelties of simply being fantasy areas and picking stuff up with the controllers.
>>
>>341361910
No, but it's a neat gimmick. A really neat gimmick.

The motion control stuff I could honestly do without, what I'm looking forward to is the day when something like StarVR becomes the norm.
>>
>>341369829
>I've never tried modern VR in my life
>>
>>341369829
Does burying your head in the ground make you feel special or something?

I'm just curious what the mindset is of people who don't even want to try it before saying it's bad.
>>
>>341369014
The basic aspect of a videogame should be (and used to be) interactivity.
>>
>>341361910
>Will VR ever be more than a gimmick?
Eventually, when the government stops using the real VR for military training and have it go commercial.

So give or take 10-20 years.
>>
>>341371545
Then you should be glad.

>>
>>341371840
goty
>>
>>341371545
Maybe when they were in the proof-of-concept phase, but ever since going commercial they've been about using interactive computer technology to create an immersive world. Some of the earliest Atari 2600 ads make a point of advertising the "life-like sound". Why would they say that if they weren't trying to sell you immersion?
>>
I don't think so because it has a lot more applications outside of videogames.
>>
>>341371667
>Eventually, when the government stops using the real VR for military training and have it go commercial.
Actually militaries are using existing VR headsets for their trainings now. Much the same reason Xbox controllers were used for some drone programs. Once commercial products are released most of the time they are cheaper and more effective than stuff ordered and built from scratch by contractors.
>>
>>341367275
I'm certain that eventually VR will get sophisticated enough to not even need hand-held controllers, kind of like the Kinect

Maybe not in the next 10 years, but eventually. And, maybe one day, there'll be a suit or neural implant you can put on to feel what's going on in the virtual world.
>>
>>341365074
no they just have to remove all of the useless post proccessing shit that adds no value and drops your fps
