Has /v/ even beaten the original classic?
>>
>>341360581
I did it. And also beat Zelda II.
>>
Yes, but not the secondary world that comes after you beat it the first time.

I didn't realize that's what it was and thought the game just reset like everything else on the NES so I just ignored it for a decade until someone told me.

Never went back to see what was actually different.
>>
Of course. But I'm still too casual for the second quest
>>
Yes, but it's cryptic garbage that literally requires a strategy guide or Nintendo Power.

Look me in the eyes and say truthfully that you beat it without any guides. I dare you.
>>
>>341360581
Back when it was released and a bunch of times since then, yes.

>>341360859
The second quest is much more difficult. The dungeon locations and layouts are all different, and many secrets are much harder to find.
>>
>>341360581
Naeh I've played it a few times, but I've never beaten it
>>
>>341361563
The game came with a partial map of the first few areas. I didn't need more than that to beat it, and I beat the second quest without help. Both quests together probably took me a few weeks of after-school time.
>>
>>341360581
Only the first cycle. To be honest is not that great.
>>
>>341361835
How the fuck did you find the random ass entrance from the dungeon I forgot the number but you have to fire up a goddamn random bush in the fucking world map.
>>
>>341360581
Yes
Found everything in the second quest also, but could never beat it.
>>
>>341361835
I'm sure you just figured out which one of the thousands of bushes you had to burn, right?
>>
>>341361563
>>341361835
I got the cart second hand so I didn't even have the map.
I just wandered around checking caves and tried to get to the end.
First time I discovered the candle could burn bushes I made an afternoon of burning EVERY FUCKING BUSH IN EXISTENCE just to check, honestly the "secret" ones are mostly just rupees or loss of rupees
>>
I watched my brother play this game so much when I was 2 years old that I memorized it.

I beat this game when I was 4.
>>
>>341361563
I beat it without any guides. Zelda 1 doesn't even come close to some of the cryptic shit I've played. You literally just have to explore.
>>
>>341360581
Probably my favorite zelda, maybe second to link's awakening. I love the difficulty and simplicity of it.

I might like startropics better though.
>>
>>341360581
I beat this game before 95% of /v/ was even born
>>
>>341362160
Fun gameplay, isn't it?
>>
got to the lvl 8 dungeon but quit because of all the wizrobes
>>
>>341362005
>>341362019
Have you guys played the game? Level 8 isn't under a random bush. It's under a highly conspicuous bush separating two areas. It's very natural to try to burn it instead of going around the long way.

Yeah?
>>
>>341362391
I played it, but a long long time ago
>>
>>341362005
>>341362019
I literally burned every bush and bombed every square of wall until I found everything. That's just how everyone did it back then. We didn't think of it as tedious or obtuse. That's just the way games were.

Once you find something on one screen, you can move on since there's only one secret per screen IIRC. You can save time by burning/bombing on the seams between squares, so it covers the square on each side with one shot.
>>
>>341360581
Last month, played metroid right after. One of these games did exploration right, one failed miserably
>>
>>341360581
I did, but with savestates.
>>
>>341362629
The original metroid was pretty terrible
>>
>>341362324
You beat it in 1997?
>>
>>341360581
Nope. Tried to play it once. Boring as shit. Same with OoT. Never touched another zelda game since. Dropped both within a half hour.
>>
>>341362369
I was 9, so yeah it was fucking incredible.
>>
>>341360581
I played it on the Gamecube on the disk that also had Ocarina and Majora's (literally best GC disk of all time)

When I came to college I lost the corresponding memory card, and I was halfway through the game. I re-beat OoT and Majora's but haven't touched that disk in years.

Maybe its time to try again.

Yeah it's a shame the game didn't give you clues about this sort of thing.
>>
Yeah. Second quest was bullshit.

>>
>>341362902
I'd guess well over 99% actually but I have no statistical evidence
>>
I first beat it on the Gamecube Collection when I was around 13. I legitimately liked the game then and I still love it now.
>>
I have.

But used a youtube video as a guide. Not even underage, I just dont have the time/patience to do things on my own.

I did, and I'm glad I did it. I tried to go in as blind as possible but I needed a guide a couple of times (bushes I swear to god) other than that, had a blast.
>>
>>341360726
Do you consider Zelda II worth playing through? I 100%'d the first Zelda and I thought it was okay. The overworld was the most interesting part of the game since dungeons have generally been improved in later 2D entries.
>>
>>341360581

Yeah.

In the 1980s when I first got it. Before the internet you just had to figure shit out on your own.

Never beat the original Dragon Warrior though.
>>
>>341360581
I missed it as a kid and didn't try playing it till way later and thought it was boring as all shit. If I didn't wait so long I'd probably dig it. I actually grew up with Zelda 2 and still defend it against all the faggot naysayers.
>>
>>341360581
I made it to the last dungeon, but I quit for some reason or another that I can't remember. Haven't really picked it up since then.
>>
It's been so long I don't even remember.
>>
>>341360581
I beat this game so frequently and so thoroughly that I can probably walk through the entire first quest without needing to wander around. I won't find every little ruby hole, but I still remember where the important stuff was.

Second quest is pretty familiar as well, although I don't recall the dungeon layouts quite as well.

I did it as a child, because having the internet in your home wasn't a thing when I was 6.

I had the map that came with the game though.

i beat the original when i was 5 but havent beat zelda 2 yet without save states
>>
>>341363304
Maybe it was because the silver arrows (or were they light arrows? I can't remember) were hidden in the dungeon and you could actually reach Ganon but be unable to kill him
>>
I admit, I used a guide to find out where the 8th dungeon was. I just couldn't deal with that.

Zelda 2 would be the better game if its dungeons had maps.
>>
I did, about 25 years ago. Maybe thee or four times since, I've never found it nearly as replayable as LttP which I've beaten at least 20 times. I'm very excited with the new game being as open as it was though.

(and yes i'm old)
>>
Yeah, emulated. Didn't bother with second quest, the game was already inscrutable enough.
>>
>>341363349
you can find my ruby hole anon
>>
I beat every Zelda game. I have to say beating 2 feels much more satisfying than 1 because 1 is simply a guide game. There's not much that is actually difficult in terms of battles or puzzles, it's simply some cryptic bullshit here and there that forces you to use a guide. Zelda 2 has fewer moments like that thanks to NPCs giving you much better clues/directions and the difficulty is almost entirely in relentless enemy AI and engaging combat.
>>
Beat it with tips from my older cousin.
>>
Only went up to the 5th/6th dungeon on an emulator but I really enjoyed the open worldness of the game. That's why I'm pretty hype for BotW.
>>
>>341363694
i bet you like your older cousin's tip
>>
>>341363043
>I legitimately liked the game then and I still love it now.

Yeah, as someone who didnt play the game until much later either, I still love it. Even if it came out in 1989 for the NES, it still holds up in the fun department. The mechanics are pretty simple now but fun.
>>
>>341363807
he gave it to me without asking so i didn't have a choice
>>
I am not a big Zelda fan, but I beat the original on my 3DS 2 or so years ago & it holds up surprizingly well outside of it being cryptic as fuck.
I'd give it a 7/10

>all these people who couldn't find the 8th dungeon

Really? By that time, you've been burning bushes for a while. And even if you weren't the type to burn every single one on every single screen, this one KIND OF stands out a bit. I thought everyone discovered it on accident way before it was time to go there.
>>
Maybe because I'm in my 30s, but listening to all of this "too cryptic, needed a guide" bullshit is sad. Most of my friends beat it and no one had a fucking guide. You just tried and tried and tried some more and figured shit out.

I still remember mapping out the desert parts in Kings Quest V on paper.
>>

Can we talk about Final Fantasy Adventure and how it did everything Zelda set out to do a thousand times better?

>>
>>341360581
Many times on an original NES. I also completed the second quest. I never beat Zelda II though. But then again I never owned it and only played it at friend's houses.
>>
>>341364241
I remember mapping out the last dungeon in Zelda II since it's so big with tons of dead end and you can easily run in circles without noticing.
>>
>>341364154

Not to mention this:
>>341363001
>>
>>341364241
>I still remember mapping out the desert parts in Kings Quest V on paper.
Doesn't take long.
That desert is small time.

Kings quest v is easier to figure out.
>>
>>341360581
Yeah with my older brother years ago

Not the second one though. That pile of shit is was too hard
>>
I still haven't read a walkthrough after all these years. I had a really good save file going on the PSP emulator before my PSP got stolen by some degenerate. I have found all the dungeons but one, whatever comes between 7 and 9. I also still can't locate the godforsaken red candle.

Anyway, I'm sure I'll try again sometime. I haven't given up quite yet.

Yes.

For anyone who has played this game so much that even the 2nd quest seems retardedly easy, I suggest you all look up Outlands. I bought it because I really like it, but obviously it's easier and free to play the rom.

Consider it the 3rd quest, but the jump in difficulty is even higher than between the 1st and 2nd quest. It has an entirely new world map, new enemies and it will punish the fuck out of you if you have no spacial awareness or suck at Zelda 1 combat. You don't even start with the sword; you get the sword in the first dungeon, which you also have to find. I fucking love this game.
>>
>>341364241
>Maybe because I'm in my 30s, but listening to all of this "too cryptic, needed a guide" bullshit is sad. Most of my friends beat it and no one had a fucking guide. You just tried and tried and tried some more and figured shit out.

Honestly it's not that people today are dumber than 30 years ago, it's just that people today have so much entertainment that they simply dont have the patience to sit down and figure things out for themselves if it's too hard. They'll simply move on or google it.
Back then, games were so expensive that you had no choice but to play one or two games for months.. so you had all the time in the world to experiment in games and discover shit.

Too much entertainment today has given us ADD.
>>
>>341360581
beat the original but not 2nd quest yet.
beat the AoL on an emu with minimal save scumming and shameful crouch-stabbing of final boss.
>>
>>341360581
beat it when i was 16, it's a must-play.
>>
>>341363192
I would say yeah, it's not a bad game
>>
Beaten the first quest multiple times, beat the second quest once.

It's the best Zelda game.
>>
>>341363116
When I was young I thought it was the crest design on the cover. Speaking of cover, I originally bought Zelda 2 as a kid not because I liked Zelda 1 but because there was a sweet-ass sword on the cover.
>>
>>341364921

That's more of what I was getting at. People are dismissively like "did you burn every bush" as though that's somehow unthinkably insane.

But yes, that's what we did. The entire purpose of getting the fucking red candle was so that you didn' t need to leave the screen and could try to burn every bush in peace.

Beat it a week ago, didn't realize where the guy who sold the ring was until I was already trying to take on Ganon.

That was a fucking challenge.
>>
>>341364241
>Most of my friends beat it and no one had a fucking guide.
Maybe you're not remembering the rest of the story, but when I was a kid a lot of kids at school were talking about this. Entrance to death mountain was just common knowledge back then. No one had to figure it out because it just spread, word of mouth, like the directions to follow in the lost woods.

I highly doubt you or any of your friends solved the entire game entirely without input from anyone else. You'd have to have been living under a rock or something
>>
>>341365909
Did you even get the Red Ring from the last dungeon?
>>
>>341367230
you can get my red ring anon
>>
>>341360581

Nope. I got to the final boss, but it lets you enter the final boss room without the silver arrows, which I didn't have. It then locks you in there, forces you to let yourself die, and I didn't want to have to go through that dungeon again and grind for health potions. I told the game to go fuck itself.
>>
>>341360581
yes but with a guide

In other anon's defense, the original SMB sent you on "another quest" that was just the original game with all the goombas replaced with buzzy beetles.
>>
>>341364730
does it require you to manipulate item drops or other nonsense metagame things that only speedrunners do?

Also I'm honestly not looking forward to the other zelda games, which I do intend to play. I'm sure they're fine. But from what I know they SERIOUSLY toned down the exploration. Which was the originals best quality.

Not that I recall? Been awhile since I last beat it, but it really doesn't ask you to do anything you didn't have to do when playing the regular game, at least nothing I remember.

>>341367872

That final run to the great palace; then the palace itself before fighting two final bosses, all on 3 lives. Fuck Nintendo was brutal back then. I wish that nintendo would come back.
