But the CEO at that time, was a moron. He thought he's the next Steve Jobs that he could get people to want what he wants. Of course, Ballmer was wrong and he was ousted. And he deserved it for being a self-involved idiot.
They probably realized the 'no games' problem and devised the solution that is Xbone-PC library unification. So that even if they don't have 1st party software (because their 1st party devs are shit anyways, like Lionhead that they shut down), their console would have 3rd party software. Having the means to develop for two platforms at the cost of one (ie no need to port) is very attractive to developers because it cuts costs, yet allows them to reach two "ecosystems" (Xbox and PC people).
And you needn't worry about the Xbox brand's future. Those who couldn't afford and have the technical know how (or patience) to build and play on a gaming PC could buy an Xbox console, because it comes ready out of the box and is significantly cheaper.

It costs them Pennies to port to xbone ps4 compared to overall dev cost, and at least doubles their potential market, it's a no brainer to relase on console, they have no stake in "pc exclusivity" only reason games like WoW don't get the port is just cause it wouldn't really work. Consoles were good for the industry when pc's were a hassle to use and setup and consoles offered better performance than pc's for the price. But consoles have been going downhill since ps3 because pc's are becoming more easier to use and easy to build a pc and customize shit.

I own an xbone, and I am happy to have gotten two years of fun out of it, and in two years time I will buy a scorpio a few months after it comes out. Same. The only things that caught my attention in the Sony conference were the Horizon, Spider-Man, and the Crash Bandicoot remasters
What turned me off of Horizon were the framerate drops and how the character you played as wouldn't shut the fuck up. The Crash Bandicoot remasters were a hue disappointment because they did a grand opening for it and I expected something new. There will be very little point to buying it if they don't actually add new features. The Spider-Man game looked really cool until I realized that all they showed was a little cinematic trailer like most of their other reveals. It would be cool if it was an animated movie reveal, but I'm waiting until they actually show gameplay to care about it because:
