Quite simply the best, and makes Game of Thrones intrigue look like trite shit in comparison. If possible get War of the Lions, which is an improved edition with extra classes, some VA, new characters, cutcscenes, missions, etc, plus the opportunity to kill the biggest shitter in the game. Twice. If using Emu make sure to find a fix for magic lag or summons and spells will take for fucking ever.
Also, if you can into math Calculator is a broke as fuck class.

Also once you git gud at RPGs I would reccomend the mainline Shin Megami games, if you've got a serious hard-on for mythology and are a stckler for accuracy in that regard, this series has you fucking covered.
If you want to jump in immediately then start with Persona 4, which is arguably the easiest one and does a good job of introducing most of the basic functions except for negotiation and alignments. If you wanna go balls deep for some top-tier suffering, then I recommend Strange Journey.

Then if you want a fan-wank extravaganza, go with Project X-zone.
The combat system is simple but fun, with combat stylized to feel like Mahvel vs Crapcom. NO GRINDING ALLOWED so items are incredibly important, but if you snag the equipment from each stage and lrn2crit then you'll do fine. Story is the worst fan fic shit but once you hit mission 7 the battles become fucking gigantic and fun as fuck, most of them turning into free for alls.
All character specials are satisfying as fuck too, and net you extra exp.
X-Zone 2 is also available and has SEGATA SANSHIRO but I haven't yet played it myself.

They're almost all somewhere between good and excellent, but the more recent ones now offer your Donut Steel a bevy of waifus, or husbandos if you so choose, to marry and have kids with. Who you can then throw into the front lines to die for god and country.
Gameplay wise it's a top down strategy similar to FFT, but simplifies the gameplay. This doesn't take away from it in any sense, as the combat that is there has been polished to perfection. The series features a permadeath mechanic, so unless you're a pussy and turn it off, you need to fight smart or die retarded.

Then, for one of the greatest games ever to take place in space, go for Mass Effect.
The incredible Trilogy features the most fantastic story you will ever know, and incredible and unforgettable characters at very turn. After the strictly average first game, the series hits it's stride with fantastic gameplay and even better story, and then 3 wraps up the series in a finale you have to see to believe, and has one of the most progressive characters ever to be put in media, James Vega. An absolute must for any true gamer.Nah, I'm just kidding, Mass Effect 1 is good but the other 2 are complete shit. If you want a great RPG in space I recommend the Star Ocean series, pretty refined combat and a shitload of endings in every game.

Shadowrun. The Genesis game is pretty good,as far as I know. Then there are the PC versions(Dragonfall,Hong Kong,and Dead Man's Switch). Dragonfall,IMO,is the best,but Hong Kong got some pretty sweet upgrades. If you want more playtime,start with DMS(otherwise it'll look like trash).
