When the cutscenes and gimmicks end in the new god of war, the "gameplay" is indistinguishable from the cutscenes and gimmicks you just watched. You're just walking forward, you're just watching scripted bullshit happen around you. It's anti-fun. Even the little combat part looked watered down, you just smack the enemy once or twice and then it enters a cutscene in which Kratos kills the monsters outside of gameplay.

You first fought the enemies in true gameplay time and then got a prompt to the finish them off, like a mini-fatality reward. it was fine. it was really cool during the boss fights too because it often triggered the next stage of the boss. I'm pretty sure this was a completely unrelated game and they just changed father to Kratos by adding the red stripe. But I do like the character direction, it's a ogical continuation of 3 where he reached the peak of his blind rage and realized what he was, so now with the kid it feels like he longs to leave his violent past behind, yet knows how much of a monster he already is and finds it hard to forgive himself. The presentation does lack in combat, but it seems to be more of a tutorializing.
My only fear is that either kid will die and Kratos will fall back into unrelenting rage, or Kratos will die and kid will instantly turn into edgelord and become same as Kratos. The combination of kid's innocence and Kratos' psychopathy is what can carry this game thoroughly.

Taking on the major gods fits the series but they must give a reason to do so or nu-Kratos falls flat on his face in character development.
I'm not saying the game will be good but it is too early to judge whether it is doomed from the get go. For example combat can easily ramp up into crazier direction when you get more weapons and combos.
