The is probably the first actual good use of an amiibo they've done.

It plays to all the amiibo's strengths but doesn't lock anything actually important behind it. This is the kind of thing amiibo should do, "power up" your game rather than being a key to access the rest of it.
For all we know, there will be dogs/wolves you can tame in the game anyway, and Wolf Link is a customizable bonus one you can summon whenever you want using your amiibo.

If that's true, then this is 100% the right way to use an amiibo.

The UI certainly suggests it based on the full body icon and name. Plus it is "Breath of the Wild" so it plays into that theme.
You'll probably be able to tame different kinds of pets including wolves which you can then name and summon. The Wolf Link would just be a unique wolf with a name taken from the amiibo figure and health based on your Twilight Princess data.
