the reason the game is like it is is because Naughty Dog is sharing tech and experience with Sony Santa Monica:

Since God of War is a linear single player only franchise anyway, Santa Monica took note of how they did the storytelling and presentation in TLOU and are trying to give the game more characterization and depth.
It's going to make a lot of old-school GOW fans pissed that this game seems to play so much like TLOU. But whatever, Naughty Dog's engine is incredible IMO and I'm happy to see it used in other games (if that is indeed what they are using).
