Are videogames a middle-low class hobby?

Or does it attract high income people and highly educated minds?

no. video games are pretty lowest common denominator, desu senpai

and I say this as someone who just wasted like two days of my life replaying KOTOR this weekend instead of writing like I wanted to.

it's just really rapid, effective stimulation that's much more fun, in the moment, than something like reading, or cinema, or what have you. it doesn't take much for a videogame to entertain you.

Get /pol/ in here.

That said I have no idea whom video games most attract. But I will say most games are probably better for your mind than Hollywood movies or television. Though to be fair that isn't saying much.

video games now are for people with nothing better they'd rather be doing (having sex with women, working in important careers that change the world, raising the future in the form of your two kids, discussing complex ideas about the real world to colleagues).

Video games saved us because having kids and working are both mistakes and we can finally end humanity with vidya, I'd like it no other way.

I can't speak for high income people, but I'm surrounded by folks with Masters and PHDs in Physics CS and CompE, and it seems like it's the same for all of us, even those who used to play slowly stopped, in the very little time available there are just better things to do, like hanging out with friends, reading a good book, or some sort of physical activity like hiking or jogging.

My pc for example is 8 years ago so it can't even run most modern games but I don't feel like I'm missing something, games don't attract me like they used to.

That's not true senpai. I come from a rich family and pirate games on principle, unless they are something that I really, really like or have interesting multiplayer. I just don't see me actually spending money on something as useless as a videogame unless it's incredible.

As for the OP's question, it depends. Games for you are what you make them out to be. There are plenty of games that can offer intellectual stimulation and I know a lot of intelligent people who enjoy at least some of them. But if you're over 20 and still playing shit like platformers, FPS, western RPGs? Yeah, you're wasting your life.

Games unfortunately do not fully utilise their potential of being a medium with extremely high degree of player involvement and decision making. Games should aspire to be like Pathologic, not like le banjo kazooie

Don't worry anon, literally no one in the entire world is happy, we just keep ourselves busy while we pretend death isn't the only constant of existence.
>>
>>341261802

yes, it is the ultimate middle-low class time waster

poor people can't afford videogames so they have fun dindun nuffin

the high middle class is too busy with the rat race, working, studying, working out, they have no time for videogames because they choose hobbies that help them network with the rich instead (if you are not doing this you'll lose economic status over your lifetime)

rich people can afford the real experiences so they have no reason to simulate them in videogames

low-middle class have no real perspective of economic mobility so they waste their time on whatever they want, to the youth it's videogames, to moms it's facebook games, etc.
>>
>>341267975
>FPS
What? That's competitive clicking, it's pretty much the equivalent of playing some basketball with friends.
>>
Video games are a waste of time that doesn't hide the fact it's a waste of time. Most rich people just do drugs, which are pretty much video games but better.
>>
>>341268064
but, let me put it this way:
If you ended up alone, would you rather have experience from real world or from video games?
The time you expend on both are the same. why not make yourself a better person?
I think that the only way to be happy is to be able to fully trust yourself, and to do that, you need knowledge.
>>
>>341261802
As someone that made ~$500 today sitting on my ass....

I still pirate games.
>>
>>341268314
I might have not been specific enough in my post. Yes, anon, they are equivalent of playing basketball with friends. Which is a good thing. In fact, games that allow it have much more value than a similar singleplayer-only game precisely because they are a socialisation platform.
>>
>>341263320
Physics and EE masters here. I'm probably in the high range. Your statement for the most part is true but it depends on the person, their workday schedule, priorities.

I agree that on weekdays I generally don't play games. But I enjoy longer gaming sessions in weekends especially on days with poor weather.

Hi.
I'm 27, married, no children but she constantly talks about it. I got my degree a couple of years ago and I'm a mental health councillor. It's a good career, pay is alright and generally people respect you.

I would give anything for the chance to put bin bags over the windows and live in a single room playing videogames and fapping to hentai
>>
>>341268626
This, socialising while on drugs and sex whilst on drugs are amazing. Much better highs than videogames. Competitive videogames are tiny highs (when you win only) for fucking losers who can't achieve socially or in business

This is why I just play fun games like EDF where I don't have to spend hours of my life researching the glitches of the game to beat fat fuck sad sack who is my opponent. In real life, I beat people like that effortlessly

Video games are pretty much a "fake" experience, since pretty much none of it can be applied anywhere else, but I don't really think it invalidates them. I can regret meeting up with people just as much as playing a shitty multiplayer game, since both can sometimes just be a fucking waste of time.

Being a better person is a pretty good goal, and I do regret a lot of the time I spent on video games (played a lot of WoW back in vanilla/tbc/wotlk), but on the other hand, even though all of that time could have been better spent elsewhere, it doesn't mean that I wouldn't find a way to waste it anyway.
What I'm trying to say is that very few things we do are actually meaningful. You can change someones life with a few words if the stars are aligned, but you could also waste 5 years studying for a worthless degree if you choose poorly. You can pad your life with knowledge and success, or you can pad it with video games. There's no real guarantee that either will pay off, so you just do whatever makes you feel less guilty.

I know I'm gonna die without accomplishing anything meaningful because I'm a piece of shit, and at 26yo I have no skills, and my life is basically over at this point, but that doesn't bother me because I know I've helped other people (a few friends with depression) and that gave my life at least some meaning.

Just do whatever you like and Hope Dawn of War III isn't gonna be a fucking piece of shit because holy fuck I'm gonna be so mad if it flops

Drugs are pretty great if you're not a dipshit and abuse them so much you become addicted. Pretty much all of the smartest and most accomplished people I know actually do drugs, and that's because it's objectively the most fun thing you can possibly do.

Playing video games while high/drunk is pretty fun though, especially with friends

Actually specific vidya genres (e.g., action) improves a lot of really helpful attributes just as well as courses/media designed for that, including better attention allocation, higher spatial resolution in visual processing, and enhanced mental rotation abilities.. not to mention helping develop a competence identity, positive emotions, and other social benefits.
