I think there's something the regressives don't understand.
This is the far future, medical technology is pretty much perfect, genetic structures mapped out and imperfect/broken genes more than likely removed pre-embryo stage to ensure the health of the child.
There is no reason why a human born in the future would be so ugly that it causes others to stop and reflect on said ugliness (ageing notwithstanding), but here we are, with incredibly ugly human characters where Bioware had to go out of their way to make them unattractive. They couldn't settle for normal looking, or plain, they decidedly went for ugly.
Now the Asari, the entire point to them is that they actually influence the minds of other species to make sure they appear as attractive as they possibly could to other races, in order to ensure being chosen for reproduction.

If you take the witcher as an example, a great deal of NPC's are ugly as hell with crooked teeth, bad complexions and all manner of less than ideal bodytypes from skinnyfat to bearmode. It works because the setting is feudal and such imperfections couldn't simply be solved by surgery or gene therapy like it would be in the Mass Effect setting. Ugly characters reminds us that it's an ugly world. I didn't consider Mass Effect an ugly world until now.
