After all this talk about Crash, I'm really in the mode to play through the old Crash games. I have all 3 as digital downloads on my PS3. Do I start playing through them now and ruin my appetite for the remakes, or do I wait the unspecified amount of time for the remakes to release?

I don't own a ps4 but I like it. Crash is one of those series that could make me buy a console.

But the presentation made it feel like they struck some shitt deal with activision just so that they can shill skylanders even more. Unless it gets bought out by sony and the franchise is given back to Naughty Dog, I'm staying cautious. The only good Crash games were the first trilogy, CTR, and Twinsanity, rest was either horrible or medicore. The GBA 2D ones were all right.

Is it even PS4 exclusive? They said at the conference that it's "coming to PS4" which basically confirms it'll be on Xbone too if recent trends continue. Xbone has more good released and upcoming exclusives so unless this is a PS4 exclusive remaster, I'll get that new xbone slim instead for it.

Dude, fuck Slippery Climb. Not because it's that hard of a level, kinda annoying but easy. No, fuck that level because there is no check point for 3 levels starting at this level. You have to do the Climb, then the Dark corridor, then the temple with bullshit snakes and spiders and really weird perspective jump, and of course the level take 2 minutes, before you can even save your progress. Which mean that you have 3 lives to not fuck up 3 times in a game where one hit kill you and where perspective is a bitch.

The first Crash had the perfect combination of a relatively unique theme while still managing to hold some difficulty to the casual player. The most memorable levels of the series, Sunset Vista & Slippery Climb belong to Crash 1. For whatever reason, 2D 'climbing' levels were not prominent in any of the future games. There are only two gimmick levels, both of which are pretty fun.

Crash 2 while not having as memorable a setting does have some pretty great levels. Cold Hard Crash is impossible to forget for anyone who has tried 100% the game. While there are more gimmick levels, the majority of the game is traditional Crash. What really makes this game great is the number of secret levels that you can discover while playing. Both the floating red gem that is just beyond reach and the nitro staircase come to mind here.

Crash 3 is absolutely swarmed by 'gimmick' levels, which makes the game a lot less fun to replay after many years. After all of the swimming levels, flying levels, boat riding levels, motorcycle levels and cat riding levels, the game ends up feeling incredibly shallow. The traditional levels that do exist aren't as memorable or enjoyable as the best from the previous two games.

At this point, I don't think Naughty Dog would even want to work on Crash anymore. Perhaps it could be handed off to another internal Sony studio? Or farmed out to an interested and competent third-party dev team (like how Bethesda and Obsidian made Fallout: New Vegas)?

Mario 64 has aged gameplay wise, it was a great first try at 3D platforming but it has issues with its camera and Mario has the weight of a feather. But it's aging is most apparent when you look at it's visuals. Crash's visuals, while old, still look great today.

Playing Jak and Daxter after Crash Bandicoot just demonstrated how much better the game could be if they weren't so concerned about grafix.

Part of difficulty of beta Sunset Vista is the unfinished level design, platforms arnt as wide as they look so you fall through a bunch of stuff. But the final stretch is also mind boggling hard.

I'd like to rate Crash 1 my favourite because I partially agree with you, but I just can't.

The save system is such bullshit and the levels are so overly linear with barely any secrets and gem paths were super lame compared to 2/3. It's pure distilled 3D fixed camera platforming, and I respect that, but some parts are just too rough around the edges.

Crash 2 just has so much pizazz, the slide/slide-jump, all the new mechanics with Skull Routes, multiple types of bonus round, super obscure secrets and one of the catchiest Soundtracks of all time (Crash 1's fits the levels better, but only main theme and Hog Wild are really memorable, meanwhile nearly everything from 2 is).

3 is pretty bad though, from over half of it being vechile levels and the actually platforming being ruined by over powered upgrades (Double Jump, Hover Spin and Bazooka let you cheese every single obstacle).

A remake of Crash 1 with 2's added features but a return to more focused platforming and ball-crushing difficulty would be perfect, and for the love of god a save system that makes a molecume of sense.
