That's not a lack of handholding, it's a lack of direction. Literally all they needed to do was tell you which continent the item was on and include some kind of hint in the quest description and it would've been enough, but the fetch quests are literally designed in such a way that you'll almost never complete most of them without either using a guide or running circles around every continent for hours until you find what you're looking for and cross reference with other times you found them to find the exact time/weather/location requirements needed to spawn them.
