It's not a reboot, it's not a sequel, it's a genre shift which will frustrate people who liked the original and not appeal to newcomers who didn't like the original because it has the stigma of the old games.
Genre shifts appeal to absolutely no one and are hated by everybody regardless of the game or platform.
Spin offs are one thing but this is clearly not a spin off. It's using old well known and potentially loved characters and putting them in a genre almost entirely not their own.

I haven't played Mirror's edge 2 yet, but I played the 1st for over a hundred hours. They tack in leveling up for fucking running. It didn't need rpg elements.WHY? They put essential moves behind upgrades, and put a horrible story in candering to feminzis who will just move on to the next trend. You really think they'll stick around for you when you fail? No, but I'll wait and see. And they made it open world, this is bad because the whole point was to move forward, you can't go back and that added thrill to it, there's no going back, it's fun and exciting and thrilling. No mistakes to do it again. You have to keep running and not look back. There were certain elements in level design you can't do in open world with that concept and vice versa.

I mean, it's okay to really push a game in with its predecessors if the predecessors actually did their job right, but most of the time, its really what the first game establishes that people don't ever want to fuck over, unless they just did that fucking bad.
In all honesty, it depends on the franchise and game itself on whether or not shit is supposed to change. If a game introduces shit that carries with the visual style and synches up with the entirety of everything else to produce a beautiful and engaging experience that is meant to be played by the player, then of course you're not supposed to change it too much. Yakuza/Monster Hunter is a good example of it keeping the fundamentals solid up to just about every single part of the series, introducing slight concepts that change the way the game is approached, but never the core concept. There's a ton of different other games like this, but listing them all would be a chore.
But, if a game establishes good shit, and then we're treated to a steady decline of player interaction in line of cinematic experiences that take over what would of been more engaging had it been in the players hands in the sequel, as well as bastardization of concepts with no good reason for those bastardizations to begin with, then there's going to be fucking questions about that. We don't ever just want the same game over and over again, since we always do want a new experience and maybe something like a slight gimmick to sink our teeth into that goes hand in hand with the previous shit, or a thing that revitalizes a concept that was weak or not very well introduced in the previous game, but like I said, it depends solely on the game in question. In lieu of multiplayer games, you ALWAYS STICK with what works, and never ever fucking go for anything that decreases the skill ceiling already established, especially if the game is very critically acclaimed for that very skill ceiling.

That's not fucking God of War. If it didn't have Kratos in it, it would be completely unrecognizable. The franchise never had absolutely amazing combat, but it was sure as shit better than this. I'm still hoping that after the opening, maybe Kratos dies or gets some kind of power boost, and then it turns into an actual action game. Unfortunately I really doubt that'll happen.

Except that's what you brought up and that's where DMC4 shines. The level design is certainly flawed, but the core mechanics are great. God of War just can't compare. Like you said, God of War is more about the environments and the presentation. Great presentation to be sure, but the combat is relatively shallow.

Kratos in the first one had a reason to feel the way he did.
By the end of the first one he resolved that arc entirely, managed to grow enough where he became a much better person(After the worst battle in the entire series), got vengeance and closed off his story arc.
Everything after that reverted the character development and it was several games of him throwing an angry tantrum until he killed everyone and died in the end.
