It doesn't need to be full dive. It can be like that one .hack movie...quantum was it? It was a 3D movie can't remember don't feel like looking it up. Anyway from what I've seen in the movie VR can be this in the next 5 years:
-sleek like sunglasses
-fov covers your entire retina
-does not use an LED screen but shoots something in your eyeballs
-captures your facial expression
-lightweight
-wireless
-graphics power runs off your phone (and phones keep getting better every year)
-EMV technology built into the glasses to add to the gameplay (unfortunately not at SAO level yet, but can be used for simple things like texting with your mind to moving objects with just your brain)
And from the hack movie they were using controllers. All of this is possible by 2020.
