There is nothing impressive about a console that will be using an APU with performance two years old.
The APU will be impressive, mind you. Just not the console. Volta is due out Fall 2017 now and that's a 10 nanometer die shrink right there, with AMD slightly behind at 14nm. There's just nothing interesting about this and it's more of the same. Consoles will never be on par with PCs at an affordable cost. Either they release one with current hardware, and charge a higher price, or they wait until hardware gets dated and release at an okay price.
Just build a PC already and be done with it. Even Microsoft realized that PC is the future of all platforms, they just don't want to scare off the dudebros right away, so it's babysteps for now.

The problem with stuff like this is that by the time R&D is done and they start selling them Nividia will already have one or two more cards out.
Because of how long it takes to create a console, I don't think they'll ever catch up to the PC. I'm using an overclocked 5 year old CPU that is still good enough to utilize a modern GPU. Instead of dropping your entire old console for a new one, PC users can just drop in a new gpu or processor. At least until your cpu socket is no longer supported.

Yes, you can. Flops is theoretical peak compute performance of a card. Games are not compute bound as a rule - the none compute parts of the card (such as the shaders) are generally the biggest factors in performance.

don't forget that devs can pull more out of the closed system of a console compared to the multiple different configurations of pc's. if the new consoles have good cpu's i predict that it'll be around fury x levels of performance on release. that's based on the r9 480x being around r9 nano performance as a desktop gpu but with optimizations it can squeeze out better performance by ~10/15% to achieve near r9 fury x performance.

I've only just started buying new games digitally and I already regret it. I've got 3 games I wish I could sell right now but I'm stuck with them. I can't even let friends borrow them. Consoles still give me the simplicity of buying physical discs and having a smooth, universal, experience without the need for a mouse and keyboard on my couch to get from games to netflix/hbo to YouTube etc. Do it all with a single controller as comfy as I want to be.
