Strafe jumping is not just moving at a given speed, you accelerate as you go. The faster you go the less control you have. You can't dodge while in the air. Jumping creates noise, alerting enemies to your location.

The original Quakeworld has quite a few radical differences in the weapons available and the way they function (the dmg they do and so on) that result in quakeworld being more suited for TDM (4v4 on big maps) and Quake 3 being more suited for Duel. In Quake 3 every weapon can be viable in its given situation. Yes, grenades, plasma and shotgun too. And the spawning weapon (machine gun) is very strong as well, at least if you compare it to the spawning weapon in quakeworld. In Quakeworld, the rocket launcher and the lightning gun are ridicoulusly overpowered. They outperform the other weapons by such a strong margin it's not even funny. Other ressources on the map (mainly armors) are really strong as well. An experienced TDM player with a rocket launcher, sufficient amount of ammo and a red or yellow armor can amass tens of frags before he dies. But the fun thing is, it's still more profitable for the enemy team to rush him and give him these frags and eventually take him down, because it allows them to access more ressourses. The facts that the ressources on the map are so strong, the spawning weapon is so weak and weapons on the map take 30 seconds to respawn put a big emphasis on staying in control (making sure your own team and not the enemy team pick up the armors or one of the important weapons). Keeping control of weapons and armors is less important in Q3 TDM, because (1) the armors are weaker (2) RL and LG are weaker and other weapons are stronger (3) the spawn gun is quite strong. This makes Q3 TDM more chaotic and more suited for duel (Quakeworld duel on the other hand is not very exiting to watch at all, the rocket launcher is so strong it's a huge campfest).

Strafe jumping is a mechanic that emulates stride/momentum. It's not a run button.

Then you'll need to learn movement tricks (they have playable tutorials in Quake Live but I think there are free games with strafe-jumping and similar things)

Of course, everyone is bitching about this game for some reason, even though, every arena shooter that has released in the past 10 years has been a massive failure *because* it follows the stale old formula. God forbid they try to push the genre forward for once.

Quake Live was a failure. Reflex was a failure. Toxikk was a failure. Unreal reboot is a failure. But hey, if you're threatened by change, you have 4 games you can go play with the other hundred people that still play them.

This would be a good thread for talking about what we could do to to reinvigorate arena shooters because it's clear that neo gamers don't like arena shooters and vets are bored of them.

Did they have to add abilities and potentially different classes with varying health and speed values? No, but it's definitely a start.

I haven't seen too many ideas to modernize arena shooters, especially games that have even tried any new ideas. Certainly D44M's modernization of MP was for the worst.

What about Lawbreakers? That seems like a fresh idea but it's borderline mobalike like Overwatch.
