Shenmue I'll grant you, but FFVII has never stopped being popular. SE wouldn't have done the whole compilation thing if it wasn't, and people have been begging for a remake ever since the PS3 tech demo trailer.
I would say the FFVII Remake announcement was roughly the modern equivalent to the Twilight Princess reveal, in it was a moment of catharsis for tons of people spending years asking for it ("Make a Zelda like that Space World trailer"/"remake FFVII like that PS3 demo").
