It's not particularly bad, I'd definitely try it out if you liked the first game. It's definitely worse than the other games in some respects but it's also better than them in at least a few respects at the same time.
Make sure you get the original DaS2 and not Scholar of the First Sin edition also. It doesn't really add anything new and it changes a ton of random shit for no reason for the worse.
The DLC for the game is also better than the base game by a good bit and worth playing through if you end up liking the base game.

Ds2 is BAD. I would say play demon souls, bloodborne or even ds 3 if you're looking to continue with the series. You might lose interest if you play the 2nd one next.

How does it improve?
It doesn't change much outside of a few graphical tweaks (for the PC version they are only noticable on DX11) and the Xbone and PS4 copies don't look much better than the original ran on their predecessors. They run a better, but that about it.
The increase in the number of phantoms you can have in the world is rendered largely moot since most players have already moved onto DaS3 and even beforehand, invasions were rather rare anyway.
The "revamped" enemy and item placements were a joke and in almost every situation straight up worse than in the base game (a feat considering that was one of DaS2's lowest points).
The only really new thing it adds that wasn't added in the free patch that the base game got was the Forlorn invaders, which were more of a gimmick than anything, just trying to add NPC invasions since invasions from actual players were so rare.
Sure the DLC is included, but you don't really save too much. DaS2 goes on sale fairly often, especially compared to SotfS, and often times its the better deal, even including the prices of the DLC.
