I'm calling this now: This Zelda will be the best one in decades, and the new high-water mark by which all open-world games are judged. The new Ocarina of Time, basically.
Nintendo's really backed against the wall on this one. This is the Zelda they really have to go big or go home on, and they fucking know it. They're not going to release anything that's not 110% amazing, because they know if they do, they're absolutely done.
Historically speaking, when they know their balls are on the line is when Nintendo has released some of their best shit.
The pressure to release a solid game, mixed with the layer of mirror polish that the Zelda name comes with automatically, on top of tempered expectations from Skyward Sword, this is gonna run away with GOTY awards, I can feel it.

The best way to integrate story, and the ONLY way Zelda should have a story, is basically the Dark Souls method, where you have to piece together a history from context and setting clues. An active story and a deathgrip on lore was a HUGE (though, granted, not entire) part of why Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword both sucked.

They're SUPPOSED to be forgettable. The characters, setting, and story are all supposed to be the framework, around which the world, dungeons, puzzles, gimmicks and combat are supposed to hang.
The best zeldas (One, LTTP, LA, around 75% of OOT, MM, WW, the good parts of TW) were good specifically because, while the story was there, the focus was primarily on the GAME part of the game, and not how it fit into the lore of the series, or how the characters were feeling.
Let me put it another way: Literally every single thing wrong with Skyward Sword (minus the controls, obviously), Fi, the stupid flying, the fact that you spend the first two hours of the game doing fetch quests in Skyloft, fighting Demise sixteen times, all of that shit was there expressly because the story demanded it.

They know they have to go big, but they just don't have the talent anymore, let alone a proper understanding of the current market and the open world or adventure genres.
Not to mention it was developed with the Wii U in mind, which will already severely gimp the game in terms of scope, let alone graphics, art direction and atmosphere.
It'll be an average open world adventure, at best.

Hasn't Mario Kart 8 sold something like 7 million? Considering that only about 12 million WiiU have sold that seems pretty decent.
And Smash WiiU has sold like 4 million or so.
For either title to bomb they would have to sell probably half as much. Probably a lot less in MK8's case.
