Pretty much every character was derailed in that game, Sly was too over the top instead of being cool and suave.

I both agree and disagree with this.
The Brain, Brawn, and Suave group dynamic isn't really that unique. It's all over the place. I also don't so much mind that the structure is identical, as Sly was never given the opportunity to train as a master thief and he really mimicked alot of what his dad did.
HOWEVER, given how they establish Sly's friendship with Murray and Bentley (the whole orphanage thing), you're right. It almost minimizes that whole dynamic by saying "Oh yeah, Sly's dad had that whole group thing too"

Except it makes sense from a certain perspective.
Sly's dad realizes Clockwerk is closing in and decides to enlist two schmucks as Clockwerk repellent and to help with some heists. This causes Clockwerk to put together the Fiendish Five to do a job which he has, up until that point, done solo. The group grows decently close to the point where Sly's dad feels comfortable enough to let the two of them interact with Sly and his mom. Dad thinks he's done enough crime for his legacy to last and decides to disband the group. Dr. M gets angry as shit since it lets him know that Sly's father thought himself more important and probably some 'crime of the century' bs while McSweeny accepts it and tries to make it on his own then gets caught.
The entire fact that their group failed, more or less, and Sly's didn't plays towards some of the themes of Sly Cooper. Sly would build upon his ancestors legacy and add friendship and brotherhood to the Thievius Raccoonus. That would be his part of the Cooper clan legacy, to break off from going solo.
