They can charge their own price without giving a dime to anyone else, also control when and if they want to give promos.
Well if I were them I'd do the same, after investing millions on the developers to make their game, I wouldn't want someone else having a fucking say so in anything and having a slice in the process.
Steam also has games that are steamworks exclusive as origin and uplay, just because you can have a wrapper start up the game in the process doesn't make it any different.
