The game has probably the most depth out of any game in terms of population management which I really appreciate. Like pretty much all games just show population as a general happiness bar or something like that and otherwise they might as well not exist.
Also I'm super appreciative of the fact that it has government types, which drives me insane about games like civ 5.
I'm enjoying it a lot but I guess it just scratches my itches. Sucks you didn't enjoy it.
