I think its something to do with Sony thinking that all the series were about was the monkeys, so they milked it without the other aspects people liked such as platforming or the cool kids.
They did put Spike in PSASBR, even if he was mistreated in a shitty game, but who knows if they change the series back into what it was.

I liked two. It was different, sure, and the gadgets were gimmicky (but so were the morphs - who actually used Genie Dancer and the kung fu one often?)
I don't like how they removed holding the net down. In the first and second games you can jump from high up and hold the right analog stick to perform a cool catch, but it's more automatic in 3. (Also the fucking RNG for catching is awful)

Sony ALWAYS used Ape Escape to test new technologies (the first game was to test the Dualshock, then we got the EyeToy MarioParty-esque game, and then the shitty PS Move one).
I expect a VR Ape Escape spin-off. Just throwing my 2 cents here.
