It is an issue they havent addressed at all. I have been there since day 1 drowning them in suggestions to make the game appealing. There was even an ambitious mutagen mod that allowed you to adapt according to your gameplay style.
You'd go herb, carn or omnivore, day-night walker, you'd get used to cold and poison biomes... up to a certain limit and after adapting yourself for a good while.
I designed a perk-based system based on that mod.
Starbound a shit. Only thing that even keeps it alive is the few dedicated roleplay communities that basically force it to not die.
Dunno, when they release 1.0 I'll probably give it a shot. Haven't played since 4-5 months after the initial early access when some friends got me to get it.
I don't expect it to hold a candle to terraria, but hopefully they've made it better than the incredibly bland game that it was at least.

Nope. Each boss is in an instance, and you can't destroy the terrain there. You fight in arenas built specfically for them (either square arenas with platforms, no platforms, or open areas), and they can only be slowed down by killing them.
Shockhopper has the smallest arena; at 3x zoom, you see the entire room in every corner. It's tiny as fuck, which makes the fight hard. The rest have a lot of open space for proper dodging and evasion.
