Ja2 v1.13 adds a shitton of stuff and complexity but it completely changes how the game plays so it isn't recommended for first time playthroughs.
There's a mod that adds a lot of patchfixing etc without changing the game tho'

Vanilla first. 1.13 will all the features is a completely different game. You can toggle things on and off to create your own perfect mod, but you need good knowledge of how the game works to do that.

The best all purpose rifle, bar none, is the M14 with the EBR kit. It will out perform every every alternative except in the most highly specialized roles.
On that note, why are sniper rifles/anti material rifles so shit? In exchange for all my action points and a second merc to work as dedicated spotter I can get a head explosion from across the map. Or I could demolish an entire platoon in one turn with some silenced SMGs and a little stealth.

Well under ideal conditions in JA2 you're never fighting at ranges assault rifles are most suitable for, you're either fighting at extreme long range because you're outdoors and can get set up or you're fighting close quarters indoors.
That's why the first quarter of the game is the hardest, at best you're fighting at SMG range against pistols and shotguns. A lucky orange shirt can murder one of your mercs at random.
