When Yu-No originally came out in Japan people also criticized the character art. They said it was lackluster compared to the artist's other past work.
Also I wonder how they will handle the time difference.
Yu-No original took place in the mid 90s.
You can see in the original how he makes comments on how cool a cordless phone is and how useless widescreen televisions are because nothing really uses the format.

There's also Kichikuou, but I don't think many people have played it. It doesn't really hold up as well as YU-NO either, being gameplay focused rather than straight-up visual novel.

I've played the game back before it got a translation in the late 90s and when it received an eng patch.
I'd say it could use some tweaking especially with the epilogue. Even the author said he originally had more planned for the epilogue but had to cut it short.
Too bad the author passed away.

You mean dungeon RPG? Rance VI and Galzoo Island are like that, though VI features first-person view when travelling through dungeon, and Galzoo is entirely in it.
I'd argue that those actually have better dungeons, thanks to being 3D and having levels, instead of entirely flat zone.
But after that there really hasn't been standard dungeon crawler from them. You could argue for Rance Quest, but that has its own share of (fun) gimmicks, and Evenicle's focus lies elsewhere.
I have high hopes for 04, with the setting being what it is, it could make for pretty cool interconnected DRPG.

Toushin Toshi 2 has that something that Rance (aside from like, IV) doesn't. It's linear and easy as fuck but exploring the dungeon and figuring out ways to progress in the story was done really well.
I also liked the inclusion of the whole tournament and having to train in dungeons before facing your oponent in a proper battle. Every opponent is different and has a different plotline resolving before and during the fight.
It's really solidly made.

That's the intention. The jewels you leave should still remain on the map even if you jump to another jewel from "earlier" on the map. Going back to the beginning of the map from the main menu is the failsafe so you can go through and get your jewels back if you mess up.
