That's one of the things I like about the series, personally. Most enemies work well in this formula since it's projectiles coming at you and part of the fun is dodging everything. Or explode into various fruits or candy if you fail to do so.

It's definitely pretty repetitive so I can see how people could get bored of it, but for me it manages to be fun so when I get into a new arena I think "Oh baby, I get to do this again" instead of "Oh christ, not again".

this

Compare it with something like, I dunno, Hard Reset, Necrovision, Shadow Warrior and the like where the areas are pretty small in comparison and cluttered with details and assets to the point that you can't dodge for shit without running into something.
It simply takes away from the gameplay.

Shadow warrior isn't about running and gunning unless your being a total fucking scrub and actually using the guns.

Not sure what happened to the color in 3. Hopefully 4 is less grey and more like the old ones and HD 1+2.
>>
>>340847864
I'm actually in the middle of playing through Hard Reset Redux and I feel like it's better than the original, not because they improved the base game but because they slapped some bandages in it.

I remember not liking the original because enemies had retarded hitboxes and movement was too slow and it just felt like shit to play in general. The dodge move in Redux makes it a lot faster, but on the other hand it also makes it a lot easier because you can tell they simply added the dodge and didn't do anything to try and adjust enemies to work with the new mechanics. The sword is utterly useless against almost every enemy too.

By comparison, in Serious Sam it all feels very fluid.
>>
>>340848037
croteam already commented on this, and confirmed 4 will have more color, as well as them trying to have the biggest levels and most enemies.
>>
>>340848781
Great. It would be perfect if they said it comes out this year too, since it's almost been five years since SS3.
>>
>>340848540
From what I remember, what annoyed me in Hard Reset was that every enemy exploded on death so I don't even know how the katana in Redux can be used. Also the lack of variety in the weapons was just sad.
I actually got to the final boss using only the upgraded rifle and plasma because I had a retard moment and didn't realize the "you need x" was just to buy the first upgrade. Thought it was an item that would appear in a mission.
>>
>>340848956
yeah, but I mean talos principle probably set them back a bit.
>>
>>340848974
The exploding enemies are the little ball robot things. They are still annoying, but they seem to have toned them down in number. Enemy variety is still terrible, though.

The katana's issue is that it doesn't really seem to deal enough damage to be worth putting yourself so close to enemies, especially considering you have weapons like the ridiculously powerful rocket launcher.

>>
>>340850726
Even the worst games in the series are still above average.
Random Encounter may be the weakest of the bunch due to balancing issues, short playtime and a severe bug on 64 bit systems that crash the game when certain sounds are played.

its a very niche game. singleplayer focused arcade shooters arent big anymore.

story and characters are kept very simple and resemble a cheesy action movie. serious sam is all about the gameplay, with only the bare minimum of cutscenes between levels.
if you enjoy fast-paced action and high-speed run-and-gun gameplay then you will love the game. if you dont, then you probably wont like it.

Next encounter is ps2 title.
I'm talking about this.
>>
>>340857106
That's an entirely different game.
Xbox Sam was a modified version of TFE and TSE which introduced Sam's cartoon design from 2 and cutscenes that were also reminiscent of the ones found in 2.
>>
>>340857129
The series villain could become Mentals Father.
>>
>>340857408
But I thought Mental was the last of his species. Or am I remembering that wrong?
>>
>>340857129
Sam is Mental. Sam goes back further and further through time, somehow appearing in Sirius. His seriousness is misunderstood and possibly mocked by the Sirians, thus causing him to become mentally unstable. In an effort to stop this from happening, Sam (now Mental) sends hordes of crazed beasts to kill himself to prevent himself from becoming Mental.

TFE was the first game my mom bought for me when I was a kid. Great fun. I was actually playing Quake 1 the other day and noticed how SS stole most of the enemies attack patterns. I also played SS3 in splitscreen coop with a friend and thought it had a kinda confusing level design and reloading mechanic was out of place. It's as if it wanted to be HL or Painkiller or something.

Low amount of assets and setpieces so instead of making everything look average they made what they have look great.

Should I try SS2?

Maybe Serious Sam just isn't for you?
>>
>>340860134
Grimrock did the same thing and the result was impressive
>>
>>340860323
You bought it, so you might as well. If you didn't enjoy the First/Second Encounters, you're probably not going to enjoy SS2 either, though.
>>
>>340860530
Also the whole game was only 1GB download
>>
>>340860323
You can if you want but if you didn't like 1 or 3, you probably won't enjoy 2 either.
>>
>>340860530
Didn't Grimrock have tile-based movement as well, so you didn't have to have dynamic shadows and so on? Or am I completely misremembering what the game was like
>>
>>340860323
no because SS2 is the worst in the series

>confusing level design

Funfact: in the maze-like parts the game actually outright tells you where to go, just not through a giant arrow in your hud.

The game used lots of tricks to push the graphics as far as it could: tile-based movement, static shadows, narrow corridors with maze-like world design, heavy asset reusage. This allowed for some of the best quality textures I've ever seen in a game

SS3 has a real slow start. Takes forever to get truly Serious.
>Should I try SS2?
If you're not turned off by all the silliness, sure. It's a much better game than SS3 but it's real unpopular because people can't take the cartoon bantz.
>>
>>340860530
The thing that impressed me the most about Grimrocks graphics was how it looked like with 3D glasses.
The models looked amazingly plastic and stuff really popped out, probably due to the slower pace of the game which let's your eyes and brain process everything better.
>>
>>340860856
Nah.

I unironically like SS2 better than BFE.
>>
>>340860948
I usually like maze designs but in SS they never seemed right to me. In SS3 especially because we were playing it after a couple of beers. Perhaps because the levels lacked easily noticeable orientation points.

God, the Time Strike weapon was like the only good thing to come out of Advance.

2's level design was a lot stronger in my opinion, but I loved the weapon design of 3, so they're pretty even.
Also, thanks for reminding me of how much the kamikazes in Advance sounded like this motherfucker.

Wasn't one of them a furfag?

But then again, doesn't half of Seriously! consist of them?

Are they real dicks or dildos? Important question.
>>
>>340863678
Literally the worst enemy design ever. Whoever thought these enemies would make the game better should be ashamed.
>>
>>340865094
A lot of the new enemies in SS3 were terrible
>>
So, what's everyone's opinion on the Enhanced mod for BFE?
