Time for a night time JRPG thread

discuss what you've been playing recently, your favorite JRPGs, recommend games, and get comfy!

About to start this game as my first SMT game and I'm looking forward to getting into it
>>
>>340831592
I've had that game on my PS3 for a long while now, but never found time to play it.

I'm getting the other endings for Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker
>favorite jrpgs
Persona 3, Soul Nomad, TWEWY
>recommend games
I would sure like some. I've been playing the Devil Survivor series for a while now and I want some change of pace.

I need one for PC, or PS2 gen and below (basically I need to be able to emulate it). And I'd appreciate it if the game recommendations are somewhat obscure since I'd already played/heard a lot of these games Thanks in gameboy advance
>>
Good taste OP, don't forget to save often and to fuse your demons.
>>
Playing through Persona 3 Portable. Played FES before, but never Portable.

Favourite JRPG is the Digital Devil Saga duology.

I'm at ~80 percent progress points for Persona 3 and Nocturne. I'll finish them... someday.
>>
What's your favourite SaGa game and why?
>>
>>340832174
If you want a good game to emulate go with Souls Blazer for the SNES

If you like that you can play the sequels in Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma
>>
>>340832782
>Souls Blazer for the SNES
Hey I looked up some game play for these games and was interested most in Terranigma. Should I play Souls Blazer first, or would it be harmless to skip that?
>>

Been playing through Phantasy Star IV and it's a great sci-fi game

Anyone got any other sci-fi JRPGs I should check out?
>>340831640
I'd highly recommend it man it's my favorite SMT game

>>

go for it

The games are loosely connected so you shouldn't have many problems picking up with the last game they're really only related by a few reoccurring themes and different cameos and such
>>
Recently been playing some Baten Kaitos. Man, I wish I saw more talk of that game around here.

It's as if everyone was in a contest to see who could be the biggest bastard.

Geldoblame's a fucker, Giacomo is a fucker, Melodia is a fucker, Kalas is a fucker...

I haven't even finished the game and I feel like there's still quite a ride waiting for me.

That music is exquisite too.

>>340832438
Agreed, brother.

When I learned the random battle theme is actually semi-randomized at certain parts I almost lost my shit.

It's not really a JRPG but I've been playing LISA recently

Grinding in Bravely Default, because I don't really want to play it.
>>
>>340834189
I hope you're playing it on Dolphin anon because the Wii really does it a disservice with it's shitty resolution

It has such beautiful enviornments
>>
I have started 20+ jrpgs all with less than 20% completion. I love the story, characters, gameplay and art design of these games but I severely lack the patience to play them and I hate this feel.

I have been diagnosed with ADHD as well but I stopped taking my pills
>>
>>340834591
Nope it's a physical copy. Should I be playing it on Dolphin instead?
>>
>>340834602
Nothing worse than getting 30 hours in a jrpg and realizing you don't really "feel" it.

Pretty much me with .Hack right now. It's even worse if you accidentally spoil the final boss like I did with Baten Kaitos Origins.
>>
>>340834602
Yeah I'm on the pills as well, but since I have so many JRPGs on my backlog I just rush through the main story and if I like the game enough I'll go back and do the side content.
>>
>>340834602
Everyone these days have ADHD dude it's not an excuse. Just need to find one that hooks you up and keep at it.

I personally find ARPGs to be easier to get into.

>>340834756
.Hack seems like such a huge investment with all the games in it.

Recently bought the FFX Remaster on Steam. My toaster is kinda showing its age, so I have the settings almost to their lowest and it runs like ass during FMVs, but I'm having fun.

Rouge Galaxy and Suikoden. Suikoden is starting to pick up, but it's quite annoying to remember the specific location for the next part, they usually just tell me a town name and I have to visit every town to find it. Still have fun. I'm going to enter the Leo's Tomb/Shine in Rouge Galaxy.
>favourite
All time, Skies of Arcadia. In general, Resonance of Fate, Chrono Trigger, Nier. I sadly don't play a lot of JRPG's.
>recommended
Skies of Arcadia for sure, Resonance of Fate is a forgotten gem of last gen.
>>
I started a new game in EOIII.
I forgot how much fun it was to draw maps and come up with backstories for your party
>>
>>340834753
I think the Dolphin version is much better just because you can play it with improved resolution and textures but if you got a physical copy I don't know if it's worth it as I know that game can go for quite high prices
>>
My favorite is DQVIII because it helped me get through a shitty moment in my life. If it weren't for it, I would have probably killed myself, so I consider it very special.
I love everything about it. there's not one thing I would change.

Playing Abyss

Am I the only one who liked playing Jude is ToX 1/2? His skillset is fluid and fast.
>>
Playing Nier. About to go fight Shadowlord. I'm always short on cash to buy healing items, because lord knows I go through them. Apparently sidequests are a good source of money, and then I found out that's all sidequests are for.

What are some games that have good sidequests? That aren't just fetch quests? Ones that expand the world, or story, or charactes, etc? Tactics Ogre and Valkyrie Profile come to mind, though neither have sidequests in the traditional sense.

Or maybe just games with good worldbuilding.

>>340836367
TO is so fucking good. Probably one of my top 5 favorite games. Never watched GC, but TO has political intrigue, which I think GC does too. Maybe that's what he meant.

It kinda does and it kinda doesn't.

Like, you know how sometimes you see one thing coming from afar and then it happens and you go I FUCKING KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN NOT AGAIN.

Baten Kaitos has this tendency where you predict one thing and it throws three at you at the same time instead.

That being said, the trailer tells you SHIT about Lyude. There's not much going on for him, as far as I know.

Congrats on such a nice JRPG thread. I rarely see one this friendly, I feel like they're almost always shitflinging and general awfulness.

Platinuming Kingdom Hearts 2 FM right now, which is pretty much my favorite game. I finished Mushroom 13 today, it took me around 2 hours to do Number 8 alone. I guess now I have to grind to 99 for the Data Battles and Lingering Will.

Other favorites include Persona 3, Etrian Odyssey 3/4, and pretty much every Tales game

I want to make time for finishing Nocturne, Xenoblade, and restarting FF7 (I only got 10 hours in so I might as well start over). Also have Star Ocean V coming soon. I don't know what to play after this. Probably Robobot

I've been playing Bravely Second recently and I've been trying to find some optimal parties for the Ba'als that aren't just 3 Ghosts/Tank and Meteor Spam. Nothing yet, which really made me appreciate Default more because despite the bullshit that was Hasten World/Low Leverage, you could still get more creative at endgame than in Second.

Favorite game is Tales of Symphonia since it was my first JRPG. I just saw it, thought Collete was a cute but then pic related got more background and she's been my favorite girl ever since.

Star Ocean 3 is probably my most recommended game since there is so much postgame content. Plus I love the customization system and tailoring the weapons to your strategy. Whether it was dimension door spamming with Fayt or Stun locking with Thunder Flare, there was so much you can do in that game. I think up until a few months ago, there was still a lot of discussion about new characters builds for some characters on gamefaqs . It was just nice to see how some people are dedicated to the game so long after it came out.

Then SO4 happened and felt so barebones compared to it. I hope SO5 has the same amount of content that SO3 did, but I am not holding my breath.

What do you mean by "easier"?

>>
>>340841087
Not him, but in most JRPGs you can just mash the standard attack or most powerful attack to victory, and only a few parts of the game require any strategy. It's a genre meant mainly for casuals and even when the game has great mechanics you rarely have to use them because that would alienate the target audience. SMT is the one of the few JRPG series that forces you to actually apply yourself.
>>
>>340841249
You can mash the most powerful attack in SMT games without any problem.
>>
>>340841336
Until it bounces back and makes you lose your turns. Or your not exploiting their weaknesses lets them get a turn and they pound your ass in by exploiting weaknesses and getting six turns in a row. Or you didn't properly fuse your party and don't have the right mix of buffs, heals, and damage abilities to get through a boss that happens to be immune to your favourite elements.

You can only mash the most powerful attack during your best times, when you've just fused a great party and won't feel underpowered for another five hours.
>>
>>340835235
I love press turns from the SMT series, but you need bosses that will deliberately hit weaknesses, spam almighty or pierce resistances. Also, enemies shouldn't have inflated HP, but the ability to heal or use items. Restrictions on grinding are necessary.
>>340841336
Yeah, but you gotta grind for ages to get skills like jihad. I've never understood retards who grind that much just so they can cheese the final boss, first you bore yourself with grinding, then bore yourself even more because the final boss offers no challenge.
>>
>tfw i just fused daisoujou right when i hit 37 because he's too fucking gamebreaking

how can you lose with makatora, meditation, and prayer, and whatever debuffs/buffs you put on him?

>>340841470

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1_7UQHIDcA
3rd stratum of the 4th maze, almost all sidequests done so far. What I regret a bit is that I made a really bog-standard party (defender - landsknecht / sniper - medic - runemaster) and I really don't feel like experimenting at all with other classes, or even sub-classes.
>>
>>340841531
In SJ, I remember Mem Aleph almost always using the most optimal attack for every situation, and never falling for magic mirrors. Lucifer in IV, the fucking final boss, uses glacial blast like a retard, even if your demons repel/drain it, and even if you put up a magic mirror on top of that. He has a good almighty skill, he should just spam that. It's also a shame that only the archangels have pierce and archangel's law.

>>340841431

You don't need to grind, just use physical and occasionally almighty attack to kill everything.
SMT games are not hard if you're not very stupid, even Dragon Quests are harder.

>>
>>340841727
>just use physical and occasionally almighty attack to kill everything.
You almost have to grind to get the strong almighty skills, though. As long as you don't grind and don't look up shit on the internet, SMT games can certainly be challenging.

Eh, I guess so. In SMT1 I used some buffs then generally spammed nerve bullets / jio / bufu / etc or just basic attacks. Battles were repetitive and didn't require much strategy. Later games require some more thought but for example Mem Alph was just pure bullshit and is one of the worst designed bosses ever, so that detracts from my enjoyment. Actually I find I often enjoy replaying SMT games more than my first playthrough because I know what to expect in advance and can prepare for it.

My favourite SMT games are the Devil Survivor games, and in general I like a lot of SRPGs because the positioning part adds a lot to the strategy.

>>340841651
Mem Aleph has an unavoidable instant kill attack that can hit the main character, so thank god she doesn't use the most optimal attack for every situation. Her other attacks basically OHKO you at normal levels if you aren't completely buffed up but the one I'm thinking of is a OHKO regardless of stats. To beat her you need to grind several levels, spam your strongest attacks and hope she doesn't choose to kill you, or you can use the password system to get some weak demons with reflect skills and hope she kills herself through magic reflection.

Someone help me git gud at this game. Party is at the 50s and I'm at Avidya. Died at Pandora's 2nd phase.

What the fuck am I supposed to be here? My party of Maki, Nanjo, Elly (best girl), and Mark are at the 45-50s. Am I supposed to grind somewhere and get better spell cards and personas? Sorry for the essay, I'm a bit lost in the game.

>Mem Aleph has an unavoidable instant kill attack that can hit the main character
That's the exception, I guess. But otherwise, she would against me. I remember having demons without weaknesses such as Thor, Sphinx and Titania, but once I'd summon Fenrir, she'd use wind twice and he would be history. You really don't have to grind a lot, but the alternative is stocking up on items, which is what I did. Also, luster candy/debilitate is fucking shit for this battle, acid breath or war cry is much better, especially if you're underleveled. She'll start undoing buffs if you alter stats too much, so it's better to just focus on either keeping down her attack, or keeping down her defense instead of fucking with hit rates.

I really suggest more people try giving SaGa Frontier or Minstrel Song a chance.

Really hoping P5 means Atlus will reuse those assets for console games, I'd love to see SMT mainline/spinoffs on console again, not a huge fan of the 3DS personally. Hopefully P5 does well too. Star Ocean 5 any good? Never tried playing any of the games before.

Wow, I fucked that up.

Wasn't a huge fan of Trails in the Sky (both FC and SC) but they were enjoyable and had this cozy, familiar feeling to them. The combat is crap and way too slow and the gameplay in general isn't great but the setting is very nice and the characters are well written.

Moving on to Cold Steel, though, I am not enjoying it at all. Playing it on Vita and I'd hoped it would be as great an experience as Persona 4 on Vita was. It's not. Not even a little. The game runs like shit with ridiculous load times for a cartridge based game, it's ugly (even compared to FC and SC), the scenes that were chosen to be voiced seem to have been chosen completely arbitrary (some of the English dub's cast can go fuck themselves as well, like Sara's VA), the combat still sucks dick, and everything is so goddamn slow. The series has such a great setting, why the fuck did they blow an Erebonia game on a cast of generic anime highschoolers? It's not like FC and SC's cast was particularly original but at least they weren't annoying, grating cliches.
I do like the OP though.
I'm only on chapter two. Does it get better? Is 2 better?

>>340843015
There's a completely separate alternate story route called Snow Queen Quest that's very similar to Persona 3's story. It's a lot harder but definitely worth playing. Look up a guide on how to access it, though, because there is literally no way you'll figure it out on your own.
You could also just redo the regular route with different characters but I didn't find the combat enjoyable enough to replay the entire game just for different characters.

Yoshitsune learns Hassou Tobi at level 83. You don't need it for the true end boss, but if you're struggling, it'll make it a lot easier.

I was in my late 70s, early 80s for the true end boss, I think.

Izanami resists physical attacks (but the game doesn't tell you) by 50%. She can't cast dekunda, so use Debilitate to keep her weak. She absorbs electricity in the second phase, so don't cast anything electric.

I'm playing Nocturne for the first time too, but I've been playing it less and less the further I get. The atmosphere is fantastic, but the dungeons are really, really not great. I'm at the Obelisk, and not really sure if I should keep playing. I've played and beaten SMT 4, and find that to be so much more appealing.

Anyone know of any JRPGs with a great world to explore? I want something that can really pull me in, that I can just get engrossed in and spend a lot of time on without regretting spending so much time on it afterwards. Something with a setting and aesthetic like the GBA Fire Emblem games but gameplay more like Final Fantasy would be great.

IV didn't have dungeons at all. I'll agree that some of Nocturne's dungeons are weak (the tunnels with the oni, Yoyogi Park, and the Obelisk all come to mind), but some of them are really stellar, and more than make up for it. The Labyrinth of Amala is probably one of the best dungeons in any RPG, and the Tower of Kagutsuchi was pretty good too.

That's rare indeed.

Persona 2 has a great story, great characters, and pretty good gameplay. The interface is clunky and the games are way too easy (especially IS) but there's lots of options available to the player so there's plenty of strategy. It's much more enjoyable than any of the other persona games in my opinion.
However, I don't think you'll like it since you're a faggot.

Ar tonelico is the only JRPG series that does this right.

Currently DQMJ3, and I have SMTIVF unopened too, can't wait to dig into that one.

How did you come to that conclusion?

Any jrpgs with gameplay similar to shadow hearts?
>>

After so many years on 4chan, I can just tell.

I need help boys. People keep telling me that there aren't any dungeon crawlers as good as EO, but I need em. I've dumped hundreds of hours into the series and need something like it. Some guy mentioned Wizardry, but didn't specify which one.

>>340853487
What this dude >>340853964 said. It's my favorite in the SMT series cause I literally have not found a game with better characters than it, besides maybe GT. Gameplay is markedly worse than other SMTs, but the story and characters more than make up for it imo.
>>
>>340855682
What SMTs have you played?
>>

Strange Journey is extremely similar to EO.

Most. Just came off of DDS2, so I'm not exactly in the mood for another one really.

I already played it sadly.

As did Mother, kind of.

Pretty good game in general. Normal battles is a fucking joke though. Dub is hillarious. Characters in the game is pretty okayish for a jrpg. Seriously is you don't have anything to play i recommend the game. Took me around 30-40 hours i think. Bosses in this game gonna rape you so hard it's not even funny. It make you think it one of those boss you suppose to lose but only to be greeted with a game over screen.
>>
>>340857093
Do you ever need to grind random battles or can I go from boss battle to boss battle if I don't suck?

And I downloaded an undub from /v/ a couple weeks ago, I can try to find the link if you want.

>Playing Trails in the Sky SC
>It took the previous game and 20 hours in this one to get good

After how lackluster the first game was and how slow was the pacing in the second one as well, it finally is starting to get interesting in Chapter 5. The whole deal with the dragon and Agate's backstory are bretty good, but the beginning was incredible slow (only really liked the bits with Joshua and the Capua, the rest were just alright).

I hope the game maintains this level of quality from now until the end.
>>
>>340857215
You'll have to grind a bit for the equipment. The weapon system in the game is pretty interesting. It uses this tetris block like thingie and you just insert corresponding skill aslong as you have the space for it.

I was playing Zwei II Plus but since Odin Sphere came out that's all I've been playing. I'd really recommend both of those (although Zwei II is only in Japanese so unless you can read it or don't care then wait til XSEED gets around to it).

My favorite JRPGs are probably Devil Survivor Overclocked, Strange Journey, Pokemon Colosseum (that may just be nostalgia), Trails SC, Ys Origin, and Nayuta no Kiseki.

I bought Drakengard recently at a con cause I know a lot of Nier's backstory is dependent on it and I wanted to go through it first hand. I have yet to touch it though cause I've been bust with other games. Is the gameplay really as bad as I've heard?

>>340838419

I played that but I remember fucking nothing. Been meaning to play it again and actually finish it.

>>340845416
>>340850461

I've personally found that even when I'm depressed, depressing stories don't really exacerbate my actual depression. I guess I just compartmentalize it when I'm consuming media. Depending on how you're depressed I guess it could be different.

Nier is really good by the way.
>>
>>340860797
If you could sit through Nier's gameplay and enjoy it, Drakengard isn't gonna be much harder. Definitely give it a go, one of my favorite series. The OST alone is worth it honestly.
>>
>>340860797
>Is the gameplay really as bad as I've heard?
Not really. There are some fun weapons to use and killing hundreds of enemies with the dragon is satisfying as fuck. The aerial missions are fun too.

>what you've been playing recently
Finished Dark Souls 3 weeks ago
>Favourite JRPGs
Dark Souls
The Last Remnant
>Persona 4
Tales of Vesperia
TWEWY

Recommend me some great JRPGs, i'll play some as soon as i finished Witcher 2, to be honest i'm kinda new to the genre

How's the Falcom games? Ys I and II are simple but cool but how's the rest?

Also should i give Sky a second chance? It's alright but kinda boring

Finished the Ar Tonelico series not long ago.
Enjoyed it really much, even the third game. Probably one of my favourites now.
1>2>=3, but 3 has the best Cosmospheres and the best girl in the series.

Replaying Panzer Dragoon Saga for like the 12th time.

Actually playing SMT Nocturne as well.

Played it on Hard when it was released.
Now, as a casual. Playing it on Normal with a guide. Much more fun.

Near the end of the game and on the fourth Kalpa. Wish more RPGs were like this. Fucking Persona ruined the series.
