Functioning matchmaking that places players against and with people of their own MMR. Not the usual "Whoa there, won 2 games in a row? Better pair you with a group of mouth-breathing retards to pull you back down."
They can deny the forced 50% all they want, the sheer amount of bullshit teams I've had after a couple of competent ones is absurd. Ideally, you'd plateau at a point where wins and losses are pretty close calls, with both teams evenly matched.
The reality is that you will get put into teams with people severly below your skill, against a team that's superior. At lvl99 with 90+ hours in the game and a lot of experience it's just complete bullshit to be matched with people who can't/won't counter-pick if they hit a brick wall, or who blatantly have not a single clue about how the game works.
Just today I've had several matches where people played Zenyatta vs. a team with Junkrat, Widowmaker and/or Genji, resulting in that player spending more time dead than alive during the match.
When I told him that there was no point in playing Zenyatta if he couldn't position himself to stay alive (I was Reinhardt and he constantly ran away from my shield...) there was no point in playing Zenyatta. Not to mention that his damage was nowhere near enough to warrant picking him over a real healer.
Needless to say he didn't give a single shit and just came up with a "it's just a game, bro :^) i can play what i want" type of response.

See, I SORT-OF sympathise if he was trying to learn Zenyatta. Quick Play isn't ranked, and there's no other meaningful way to learn characters you've not played yet. Vs AI is always a stomp because everybody just rushes the spawn point and kills them all before you get to try yourself out.
I'm level 50-something, but I've never really played as Zarya, Genji, Symmetra or Widowmaker. If I go do that in pub quick games, I'm going to be utterly useless because I'm matched with people who've been playing as long as I have, but I can't learn in AI matches, so I'll just have to be terrible for a bit.
Only thing I can do is I have a friend who's only just got the game, so I join HIS matches, but that relies on him being online.

The problem was that he already chose the worst circumstances to try Zenyatta out. The only times I've taken a shot at him was when we already had a dedicated healer and our team comp had a solid front-line.
Lo and behold I was actually able to buff, debuff and do damage.
The rest is the usual lack of general knowledge about the game. Knowing how to push, knowing when to counter-pick, knowing when to fall back.
I mostly play tanks, which means I can rarely switch to, for example, disrupt an enemy Widowmaker that's giving us hell. Of course the Winston we already have is constantly chasing down Reapers and getting killed...

"On fire" meter. You get points by doing stuff you're supposed to do (capping objectives, blocking damage as Reinhardt, reflecting as Genji, headshotting as Widowmaker etc.). They decay over time, unless you can keep the streak rolling.
Doesn't have any benefits except showing that you're doing your job. You can also get a card at the end if you spent a high % of the game on fire.

I don't get why anyone would leave an OW game. Games at worst end in 10 minutes, and you get an exp compensation for playing. In League, you have to wait a minimum of 20 minutes to surrender, and hopefully your teammates aren't too stubborn enough to accept the vote.

If you go to the social menu screen before a game ends you can right click on players you prefer to play with and the ones you want to avoid. The game auto puts you with the ones you prefer if they are available.

Overwatch suffers from the same thing as Heroes of the Storm, that it's way too casual.
