The characters and story are quite charming. /v/ loves to hate it as a result of all the publicity it's getting. Basically it's underrated by /v/ but overrated by everyone else. Definitely worth a try though, I loved it.

Not really man, the boss fights are fun and a lot of the regular fights are fun too.
You just don't seem like the kind of person to like Undertale's gameplay, and that's okay.
It's a charming game with a unique premise and approaches to its mechanics and narrative, that features some replay value and a great soundtrack. That said, it isn't perfect. It could look a bit better, there are some narrative nitpicks, I didn't like or care for a chunk of its cast, being forced to play it twice with almost no variation for the pacifist ending is a chore and the game panders a bit too much to the LGBT community to the point of it being a bit Bioware.

There are better old school RPG's and there are better bullet hells. Undertale resides in a below mediocre placement as far as gameplay goes. Everyone just loves to stroke their cocks over the meta moments and story which doesn't unfold until the last 20minutes. It's a bad game, get some taste.

The gameplay was enjoyable and I liked how even on a pacifist playthrough you still had to use the timing based attacks in at the very least one fight of the game The music was fantastic and easy to listen to on loop for a long time. The characters were well done and generally likable (including just basic encounter monsters), giving you reason to not slaughter them and making a genocide run actually make you feel like a monster. The story was great and didn't drag on at any point, it did what it set out to.
10/10 in my opinion, but I know why it doesn't appeal to many. The hatebase and fanbase are both cancerous as fuck though

Undertale is the kind of game you have to really turn your brain off to enjoy. If you really take a deep look at the writing, characters, music, gameplay, and the "unique" gimmick of "remembering" the player's saves it's all actually pretty shit. (though the music is the least bad) However, the thing about the game that I think makes it stand out to so many people is its focus on the emotional aspect. It uses its gimmicks and narrative to try to (very obviously) make the player "feel something."
For me, it wasn't very effective. Hell, I love musicals, so it really says something to me when this game was not able to, for the most part, get me emotionally invested. I do think there were a couple of genuine moments, like Toriel avoiding hurting the player if their health is low, and me actually hesitating for a second before killing Papyrus in genocide run. But besides that, there were far too many cheap or even downright manipulative moments meant to convince you that the characters were "charming" when they pretty much had as much development as a background character in a children's cartoon.
