It's not 'selfish' to not link the fire. In the end you're someone else's pawn no matter what ending you go for, and there's no elucidation of what is better for the world whatsoever in any of the 3 games. This is something I would have wanted the sequels to touch on, but instead they just rehashed the premise and don't offer any kind of explanation whatsoever. So conveniently every time some jackass in another universe linked the fire, you never actually get to see what would happen if someone took the other ending. Really it's all speculation based on the personalities of Frampt and Kaathe in DaS and what they represent. A lot of people side with Kaathe because he's actually forthcoming about the situation but it could always be a double bluff of some sort. You could debate forever whether Frampt or Kaathe are in the right. That's kind of the point of the endings anyways.

Now that is the most controversial. I think that whatever "ritual" the LoC did, it wasnt the true linking of the flame, but rather a more temporary and weaker solution to increase the strength of the fire while setting up the real linking of the flame ("five thrones for five lords, in a reenactment of the first kindling"). I also believe that said ritual might not be 100% voluntary, as the crestfallen talks about Aldritch "And they made him a lord of cinder, not for virtue, but for power", aka, captured the strongest nigga around and sacrificed him to the flame.
Where the shit is Aldia?
>A "scholar" is mentioned being the tutor of the prince, who happened to give up the idea of linking the fire. Probably was Aldia convincing him not too. He might be gathering forces to keep the chaos going, maybe overtake the darkness and light.

The geography doesnt make much sense, but can be some case of physical Yggdrasil holding the world up. In the intro of ds1 there is an implication that below the ash lake there is even more stuff, mostly abandoned pure darkness,from where the humans came from.

Again no real answer, but i can see it the following way:
They didnt knew about the cyclical nature of the world. To then, if it went dark, it would be dark for ever.
Frampt probably had some pity and dint want to see it happen, so tried to keep people linking the fire, as in the dark lord ending, if it failed, he went "ah, whatever then"
Kaathe probably saw the original dark nature of pigmy / the dark soul of humanity, and wanted them to get over it already and stop delaying the inevitable.
Somewhere in the timeline, some chosen undead choose not to link the fire, and a age of darkness came. But given the real cyclic nature of the world, the first flame never trully died and some determined undead came and linked it again.
Kaathe saw how meaningless was his actions in ds1, and had a idea in ds3. "stealing the flame". You arent abandoning it to someone else do it, or trying to helplessly extingish something that is basically a universal constant, but probably making it much harder for the kindling of the fire. Still gonna fail in my opnion.

I figured that the "Soul of Cinder" is a meta-narrative thing where all of the "lords" are the players who chose the "link the fire" ending of DS1 whose characters have all been merged together into one being. Basically, your Chosen Undead is the final boss, in a way.

Kinda, I interpret the fact that you just kind of catch fire as opposed to the explosion in DaS1 as meaning that the fire is beyond saving at this point. The fire when it goes onto you just sort of stays there and softly crackles a bit. The fire might last a little longer, but it'll fade away much quicker than it did last time.
The fact that multiple Lords of Cinder exist at the same time leads me to think that the flame has gotten to the point where it needs to be linked frequently. With no one left with the potential to link the flame, they had to have someone steal the power used previously to link the flame to link it again. But since that powers used up now, it doesn't really matter if you link it or not cause the age of dark will beckon again shortly, this time with no one left to link it.
Better to just let it all end already

Maybe the 5 Lords in the game are just the 5 most recent, and everyone else was just too far gone to form back into a whole being. Maybe all the lords are supposed to come back, but the older souls are so fucked up by age that they could only ressurect as a single being, the Soul of Cinder.
