Had a 5 year warranty on it though so I was able to get it replaced. It was replaced with another pre-owned 60gb which broke down after a couple months. Didn't have another 60gb to replace it with, new or otherwise, so I got a new 40gb as a replacement. Have had the 40gb for about 4 years now and it works fine. Only thing I've done to it is switch the HDD out for a 500gb. Miss being able to play my PS2 games on my PS3.

Until early this year, when I sold it to a friend, I had an original $600 phat PS3. Played the shit out of it, and it didn't die. Not bad for something that was used a whole hell of a lot more than any casual on /v/ uses their consoles. Especially for around 9 - 10 years.
Had a slim, it shit itself in several ways at once (dead laser, dead hdd within the same week) and I had to buy a new one which is also a slim, which is also slowly but surely shitting itself (hdmi out died a long time ago, composite video out does weird shit every once and a while).
PS3 is not a very reliable system, although that's not exactly what Sony's known for.

i looked it up and i think the cpu unsoldered itself or the fan stopped working but it was definitely something related to how hot the box gotlost all my data on a foolish assumption that sending it in to the offical sony warranty repair guys would preserve my HDD data - that they'd keep the drive for me or at least clone it - i was wrong and it hurt like hell losing years of data. only upside was they sent back an exact replacement for my original 80 gig fat

I thought about getting a Cobra ODE but since I'm on firmware 4.66, you have to make a swap disk, and even then only some games work (games that have an update or something)

I used to have the fat 80GB model, which was shortly after backwards compatibility with PS2 games was discontinued (I believe the 40GB model was first to do that).
Then my sister took it with her and now I have the 500GB super slim model.
So, now that the PS3 is going to get discontinued, how is CFW going for it? I have a Slim with the latest FW, and having it for other things would be fun.
