In shiren the wanderer, dragon can breath fire for fixed damage

Rank 1 dragon can only hit you if you are in their line of visione
Rank 2 dragon can only hit you if you are in the same room
Rank 3 dragon can hit you from anywhere on the floor, that means if there is a rank 3 dragon he will breath fire every 5-10 turns and will completly wreck your shit, without you ever seeing the dragon in the first place

If you haven't played it, I highly recommend it.
>>
>>340785217
It was a great game
>>
>>340784885
Most people are mixed.

It's definitely the hardest because it involves bigger floors, hunger is more punishing, and there's new things like enemies evolve after defeating a partner. There is an end state though because you recruit through jobs and you can't repeat them. You also get locked out of using most pokemon until later levels due to cooldowns, which pissed people off.

It has the worst story other than adventure squad, but my favourite story is from GTI so what do I know.

I still like it. Best gameplay in the series otherwise.
>>
>>340784804
Xom will randomly perform actions whenever the fuck he feels like it.
These can be good such as buffs, summon help, polymorph you into something stronger for a short time, polymorph enemies in to something weaker and other such effects.
Or neutral harmless stuff like alter the area you're in to something silly, or make you spray harmless foam that doesn't do anything.

Or he'll do bad stuff. Like summon shit out of your league, randomly debuff you, banish you to the Abyss, teleport you around the dungeon (including into a monster nest or even into a wall which is an instant kill), polymorph nearby enemies into harder enemies, and even trolly shit like moving the stairs away from you as you draw near.

So literally at any step you could be instantly be fucked by RNG.
>>
>>340784895
NetHack is fair, though, a veteran player can ascend most of the time without any sort of grind, just going doing the dungeon (and then up).

And while I don't play it at "expert" level so I wouldn't know if it can be ascended in reliably as well, Slash'EM is certainly a direct upgrade in terms of how many ways there is to die, as the name kinda implies (Super Lotsa Added Stuff Hack, Extended Magic... and most of those things added involve a way to die).
>>
>>340784885
I bounced off of it super hard. Everything takes forever to kill and attacks don't do a lot of damage, you run out of PP incredibly quickly.

I liked the old ones though
>>
>>340784885
ways to exploit the game don't come until much later, items are more important than ever, early dungeons have 1 hit kill room attacks, floors are big enough that you will actually manage to starve, enemies evolving is more bullshit than ever and is basically an instant reset/failure, mega evolution is a double-edged sword that will end in wiping your party 50% of the time
>>
>>340785323

Weird, a very relevant thread to something I was just wondering

I played Mystery Dungeon Red a long time ago and remembered enjoying it a lot. Just today I started Explorers of Sky on an emulator and plyed a few hours. Made it to the part where you find the big gem in the waterfall cave. It hasn't really gripped me yet, though.

Does it get better? I still like the core gameplay loop, but it doesn't seem to have tons of depth yet. I started with Pikachu and Vulpix if that matters at all

I don't know why they're so stubborn about that. It was worked into the story of Super but in the other games I don't know, any Pokémon could have filled those roles. They probably didn't want to do all the emotion portraits for all those Pokémon, but they started doing it in Super so maybe pre-postgame evolution might be possible in a later game.

But c'mon, don't you want to be cute forever?

You can't grind levels during the story, but you can grind items via Pelipper Island, which is much more important in Super. After the story you can grind EXP all you want.

You get most of the good items on the first go in treasure dungeons, so no more grinding ZIS for that Tight Belt (which is an improvement imo but feel free to disagree). It's because these items are now one goal of the post-game instead of just being there.

Infinite missions are gone but you can still go into dungeons without them (though there's really no point unless you like the gameplay THAT much). And recruits escluding you and your partner have cooldowns but it gets less common the higher level you are. It never fully goes away, unfortunately.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon has a REALLY bullshit mechanic.

After a certain point in the dungeon "the amber is surging..." will pop up.

This means that all the monsters get a massive stat boost and take forever to kill unless you abuse ailments.

The worst part about this? Enemies who are killed by ailments or traps DON'T GIVE ANY EXP.

Monster Houses can still happen when the amber is surging.

Drifblim. I'm not even talking about Drifblim at max stats. I'm talking about PMD Drifblim with the Minimize

buffs and Unburden (with no held item and being capable of both Gust and Shadow Ball), at quadruple speed from

Unburden Ominous Wind, equipped with his Breeze Scarf, a Draft Ring, control of the IQ Skills and Quick Striker

for a quad hitting normal attack, with stat drinks and Life Seeds implanted in him so he has 999 HP and 255 in

all stats and can perform Ominous Wind spam while being an expert in shrinking and evading attacks, while also

having an immunity to Electric and Ghost attacks from the Sky and Nether Globes, and also being permanently at

double speed due to the Sky Gem, and having every beneficial swap item in the Treasure Bag for a grand stat

total of 275 Attack, 269 Defense, 295 Special Attack, and 281 Special Defense, after using Ominous Wind enough

to hit +10 to Attack, Defense, Special Attack, and Special Defense.

Nethack is a masterpiece of the Roguelike genre because there are no truly unavoidable deaths. As long as you play cautiously, and never use any un-id'd item, and know the enemies, you can win 100% of the time.

...with the sole exception of an early enemy finding a wand of death on the ground. That's the only truly unavoidable bullshit death. After the first time you die to a cocktrice you should know to always treat them with the utmost care

There are a lot of roguelikes where you still have a chance of dying randomly and unavoidably even if you play absolutely perfectly and never make a single misjudgement just because of bad design.

In nethack you have no excuse for dying once you obtain some form of reflection except for just ignorance
>>
I've played the first Pokemon Mystery Dungeon for the DS and liked it. Are the others good? I think I tried explorers of dicks or whatever but it was so fucking wordy I got sick of it. Does the story ever matter for progress? I really don't want to read any thing I don't have to.
>>
>>340788936
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is the PERFECT babby's first roguelike. It's fun for any skill level. Protips: when playing casters, macros will save you a shitload of tedium. I macro "za." to a button which automatically casts whatever spell is in slot a at the closest target.
>>
>>340799732
Perfect for babbys as long as they play shit like MiBe.
>>
>>340784885
It's the easiest by far because items are fucking broken, especially wands.
>>
>>340799913
Okay, and?
>>
>>340799458
Play explorers of Sky. The story is highly important for progress just like the first game and is essentially the Pokemon Crystal/Emeral/Platinum to Time/Darkness

You don't HAVE to read everything but it's highly recommended that you do, the story's great.

There's always a little symbol next to the dungeon you need to go to so you can ignore text if you want, but there's no skip button so you have to manually scroll past it all. Super doesn't even give you a break, it's just one dungeons after another.

They're all story-heavy, the gameplay isn't really the focus until post-game which can take about 20 hours depending on how lucky/good you are.
>>
>>340800226
No elaboration. What I meant is all there.
>>
>>340799986

As opposed to previous games? You just need to use items more often in super because the starting difficulty is already a notch higher than previous games.

I've noticed that, as much as most PMD fans say the story is where it's at, they put gameplay above all else. Which isn't a bad thing, but why discount a certain game's story in a sotry-driven series just because the game part isn't the best?

Honestly why I stopped caring about even fans' opinions on these games, no one knows what they want, or they just want Explorers over and over again.
