1 feels very different from the others; it has a much more tense atmosphere (almost survival-horror like) that comes from it's roots of originally being a Resident Evil game. It looks absolutely beautiful on the HD collection and plays like a dream, though you will probably have some trouble getting use to it, at it really comes from a different era. It is worth it, though,
2 is the worst in the series bar none, with some game design that will make you go "what were they thinking" a lot of the time, but it does have some legit cool ideas and did some good additions to the series. I recomend playing it at least once,.
DMC 3 really is the best in the series gameplay-wise, taking ideias from the other games, refining the FUCK out of them and creating what I think is the best combat system in any game ever. It offers incredible depth, variety and freedom, while also having the most content as far as bosses and enviroments in the series. It also has an deceptively well-done story.
4 build on top of 3 mechanically, and plays very well, but was rushed as fuck and as a result the characters don't have the same variety and depth as Dante had in 3 and it has a severe lack of content as well. SE added 3 more character, but it feels pretty rushed to me too, considering how unbalanced they are (Vergil is OP as fuck, while Trish feels rather weak)
I reccomend you play all of the games until you beat them in the Dante Must Die difficulty (except for 2 if you don't enjoy it) as that is the real way to experience it IMO.

I don't think 1 is the best in the series but god damn that doesn't mean it's shy of perfection. EVERY time I replay it I find something new or gain even more of an appreciation for the game. I think it might be fair to say that it's Kamiya's greatest game ever.
