Had we have gotten a "proper" 3D Mario game for the Wii U, it could have been about drawing patterns on the touch screen W101 style to integrate various spells into Mario's usual platforming mechanics. There could be all sorts of combat or puzzle potential there, and a great chance for a spoopy Hogwarts-esque aesthetic. Sunshine was a beach-themed game, so a game that's essentially all different types of ghost levels would be sweet. Call it Super Mario Fantasy or Super Magical Mario or something.

Worlds are connected by trains
There's trains sections similar to Spirit Tracks but a bit more fleshed out and interesting somehow
Coins you earn in levels are used to upgrade the train but there's special minigames you can play to earn good parts
