Prototype HL2 was barely coherent and if the leak is anything to go by, just a pretty face. I agree the aesthetic is much cooler, but the game they were making at the time was not very good.

Yeah and they were supposed to release it within the next year. Things weren't going to change for the better unless they scrapped it and did what they did. HL2 is definitely better as it is now than what it was then.

Yes, we all know that, and we also know that HL2 had a horrible direction. The first HL had much more cut content than HL2 (much of the cut content of HL2 was just concepts) due to these conferences the devs had were everyone contributed with different ideas, but Valve devs knew how to match everything in the end, making a game a little bit incoherent in some parts (like that giant fan in Blast Pit) but a much more interesting game nevertheless, unlike HL2 were we got so many shitty, uninteresting sections like the airboat section.
