I disagree. Yes, your only reference points are the Aurora and the pod, but that's not difficult to learn where stuff is.
You should find the mountain island on your own by seeing it. The floating island's position is given to you in a message, and as far as exploring the underwater, you just have to travel, maybe pick up some signals near the Aurora for inspiration but they're really not necessary.
Eventually you will need to cheat with a map if you're trying to find all the blueprints, but most of them aren't really necessary.

Don't fall for those tricks anon. The best first base places are around 40-70 meters down I've found, on cliffs or near that area with the huge sand dunes and lots of wavey red foliage, where silver ore spawns a lot. Build not on the sea floor, just on the cliffs or pillars nearby.

Hit F3 to bring up shit in the upper left
Hit ESC to bring up the menu and enable cursor
Click and hold mouse button over the console enable checkbox - I believe this closes the ESC menu
Hit ESC to open the menu again
Bring the mouse back up to the enable console checkbox and release
