The console command "gfx_fSaturation=*" (with * being a number between -1 and 10) is your friend.
The Saturation slider in the option menu only goes up to 1 so you can make it MUCH more colorful.
Be aware that a lot of the textures weren't really made with those values in mind, though, and that everything past 4 or 5 may cause eye cancer.

I recently played through all the Serious Sam games and while I don't think 2 is a bad game, it is definitely the weakest of the series in a lot of aspects:

-Your movement speed feels way too slow, probably because they dumbed it down for the console version
-There are way too many annoying vertical enemies. In TFE/TSE generally you only had harpies to worry about which weren't that bad, but in SS2 you have the witches and the helicopters, which just fly all over the fucking place and it gets really annoying to fight all the shot on the ground as well as them
-The weapon placement is weird, like you'll have Clawdovic and the Plasma Gun for like 2 episodes, and the grenade launcher appears only in the last level and it is totally worthless.
-While vehicles are a nice addition, they control like ass most of the time and make a lot of the combat way too easy.
-You start off every level with 100hp and no armor, which can feel really cheap if the games spawns you next to hitscanning shotgunners.
-The art design and new enemies are all over the fucking place. Some are okay like the orcs and the demon tanks, then there are football players, suicide clowns, wind-up rhino toys and a cigar smoking t-rex mechanoid with a mustache.
-The "humor" is pretty terrible 9 times out of ten. The tenth one is "so bad it's good" humor.

I will give Croteam credit though, every planet feels different and unique, the music is pretty good most of the time and I do like Clawdovic and would like to see him return in some way.

Yeah it was even generous with the Devastator ammo, which I really liked. The Devastator was hilariously broken and fun to use.

Only thing I didn't like was the final boss, I couldn't figure out how to place C4 and avoid his hammer attack, dunno if it's even possible. So I just ran backwards and cheesed him with everything I had

I hope for alternative fire modes and better weapon balance. The originals had immaculate weapon balance (perhaps sniper rifle was a bit too strong) and BFE ruined all of it by removing completely normal weapons and adding stupidly underpowered C4 and stupidly broken Devastator.
Also I hope for less hitscan, no dust clouds and better enemy design that actually considers the fact that they have to work together with other monsters in a big blob, BFE fucked up by adding enemies that were unusable in big fights like those pillar fucking monkeys or floating alien witches.

Bring back the grenade launcher, but try to keep the weapons styled in the same "realistic" way as BFE, but behave like they did in the encounters. I also think that pacing needs to be improved to make puzzles flow better with gameplay and make 4 have less "down moments". Lastly, bring back the classic NETRICSA layout, I loved that shit.

Universal is right. The HD version actually buffed the gun compared to the classic version. It used to be the same damage as the Tommygun but double the fire rate. Now it's literally a better Lasergun.

Besides, even if you CAN use it on the bigger enemies, it's very impractical, since they can pull you over and you definately don't want to be near those assholes.

The best use for the mutilator is probably against kleers and kamikazes, almost makes them trivial in some parts.

Well if you time it right, you can plant the C4 and blow it up before the enemy has a chance to attack. It's a lot more risky with the mutilator
